Although we did meet a far less intimidating Variant of the character, He Who Remains, in the season 1 finale of the Disney+ Loki series, we will get to see what the true Conqueror is capable of when Jonathan Majors debuts as Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Already being hailed as a huge highlight of Marvel Studios' first Phase 5 film, Majors commands the screen in every scene he appears in, and establishes the villain as a powerful force to be reckoned with as we built towards Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
As ruthless as Kang can be, however, he does seem to feel that his actions are justified, and Majors believes his character does view himself in a more heroic light than everyone around him.
"I think people are inherently good, and I think people believe that they are inherently good," the actor tells THR in a new interview. "If you think you’re the bad guy, that’s not a very natural thing. What Kang is going for is essentially good for him and potentially only for him. And so I would say that he aligns with the idea that he’s the hero of his own story and perhaps other people’s stories. And that’s where things get a little conquer-y."
Majors also revealed that he listens to a lot of music as part of his prep for upcoming roles, and chose a somewhat surprising tune to get into Kang's headspace.
"So early on, I said to Peyton Reed, 'Hey, man, I want to play this song,' and the song I played him was Stevie Wonder’s If It’s Magic. That was the highlight that connected us. So if you know the tune, you know that it’s not a very Kang song. And yet, I felt that there was something so elemental in it that connected to Kang."
Quantumania hasn't been getting great reviews (it's actually become Marvel Studios' second "rotten" movie on Rotten Tomatoes), but it's actually worth seeing for Majors' performance alone - and to find out why Kang is going to be such a potentially world Multiverse-ending threat to the entire MCU.
