We previously reported that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was in danger of suffering one of the worst second-weekend declines ever for a Hollywood superhero film, and while it didn't drop quite as low as the predicted 71.6 percent, it wasn't too far off.
The latest box office numbers are in, and Marvel Studios' superhero threequel fell 69.7 percent in North America - the worst drop ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie after eclipsing Black Widow (67.8), which opened during the pandemic and was made available on Disney+ simultaneously.
It's also the third-biggest second-weekend drop for a $100M+ opener behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Not great news for a movie that's kick-starting a new Phase of the MCU, but Ant-Man 3 has been faring slightly better overseas, and currently sits at $363.6 million worldwide.
Major studio blockbusters often prove to be somewhat critic proof, but that hasn't been the case for the MCU. Eternals was the first movie in the franchise to drop to "rotten" status on Rotten Tomatoes, and underperformed. Quantumania became the second, and appears to be following suit.
What do you guys make of this development? Did you anticipate Quantumania taking this big a hit at the box office, or do you think it deserves more success? Drop us a comment down below.
