Marvel Confirms That Evangeline Lilly Is Playing Hope Van Dyne Pym In ANT-MAN

Despite several outlets reporting that her character would be known as Hope Van Dyne in Peyton Reed's Ant-Man, an official Marvel Studios press release confirms that Evangeline Lilly is playing Hope Pym, a character better known as "Red Queen" in the MC2 Universe...

Well, this is interesting. Despite reports coming out of Comic-Con that Evangeline Lilly would be playing a character known as Hope Van Dyne in Ant-Man, it has now been revealed that she will in fact be Hope Pym. If the name is familiar, it's because that's the daughter of Hank and Janet Pym in the MC2 alternate universe which also features Spider-Girl. She has a twin brother called Henry and eventually becomes the villainous Red Queen following the death of her parents, something she blames the Avengers for. While we could see this play out in the movie, it still seems far more likely that the Lost star will be a new version of The Wasp, a character that Joss Whedon had at one point included in an early draft of The Avengers. We don't know what role Janet will play in Ant-Man, but she will obviously be far too old at this point to become a member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Turning Hope into a villain seems like it would just be a wasted opportunity, wouldn't you agree?

Evangeline Lilly and Corey Stoll have found their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the female lead and antagonist, respectively, in Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” in theaters July 17, 2015!

Lilly will play Hope Pym, the daughter of Hank Pym, while Stoll will play Darren Cross, a.k.a. Yellowjacket, the antagonist of the film. The two join stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang) and Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), along with director Peyton Reed, for the size-changing super hero’s first cinematic adventure.

“We’ve been fans of Evangeline for years, and couldn’t be more pleased that she’s agreed to join us on Ant-Man’s journey to the big screen,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “We look forward to audiences learning more about her character when she joins forces with Hank Pym and Scott Lang in 2015.

"Corey brings depth to every role he plays,” continued Feige. “As a major part of the Ant-Man ensemble, we all wanted an actor who could be both cunning and sympathetic, and help create a character as dynamic as Marvel's best antagonists."

Most recently, Lilly impressed audiences around the world with her portrayal of the willful and skilled Elfin archer Tauriel in Peter Jackson’s second installment of the Hobbit trilogy, “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug,” and will once again reprise the role in “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” later this year. Lilly was first introduced to audiences, who turned into die-hard fans, when she played Kate Austen for the entire length of ABC’s international hit series “Lost,” for which she also received a Golden Globe nomination and won a Screen Actor’s Guild Award.

Stoll, celebrated for his Golden Globe-nominated turn as Rep. Peter Russo in "House of Cards" on Netflix, recently appeared in "Non-Stop," which opened in first place at the box office earlier this year. The actor currently stars in “The Strain” on FX, the series premiere of which earned eight million viewers, and will next appear in Showtime’s award-winning “Homeland” series.

But the question still remains: WILL there be a Janet Van Dyne in the film?

The character was first announced as Hope Van Dyne, so that means Janet Van Dyne is her mother.

Marvel should also confirm I'm drinking alcohol right now.

I don't get why Marvel has made this huge deviation from their source material.

I mean there has been some pretty big changes but Hank and Janet are 2/5 of the original Avengers.

I reckon that E.A.Wright is responsible for us never seeing the real Avengers.

I applaud Marvel for eventually calling out this "big director" and backing their own back story - not some spin that spits in the face of 60 years of history.

Its still pretty cool but could have been better

They have totally trashed Ant-Man. Bush League. They need to hire Bryan Singer for the Ant-Man sequel to do some time travel plot-line so we can actually see Ant-Man and Wasp fighting alongside Captain America, Thor and Ironman in Avengers 3.

"Janet's character has been wasted."

Only short-sighted people say that.
They could give this obscure Hope Pym character all of the characteristics of Janet van Dyne and have her join the Avengers as the Wasp.
Who cares what the character's alter ego is called?
And who care if she's Scott Lang's love interest and not Hank's? Is a female character defined by her boyfriend/husband?

A bunch of close minded people around here.

"Why the deviations?" Because Edgar Wright started this project 8 years ago before they had truly hammered out what they wanted the Cinematic Universe to be, and they obviously gave him a lot of latitude to use the characters he wanted to. Then it took so long to get made that they didn't want to hold back Ultron to wait until Ant-Man finally came out.

However, they've done what they could to keep things somewhat in line with what they should/could be:

-Hank should be Ant-Man and Jan the Wasp: no reason this couldn't still be true, but in a 70's period piece or flashbacks. They obviously didn't want to break up the couple by having Lily play Janet.
-They should be founding Avengers: well the "Avengers Initiative" idea obviously predates Iron Man, and Hank used to work for SHIELD in this, I believe. Maybe the whole thing was their idea.
-But we'll never see them fighting alongside the Avengers: Maybe. Unless it's against Kang. Or the Time Gem is involved. Or other wacky comic-book things happen.

It's clearly not ideal... But I have to at least give Marvel credit for working with the hole they found themselves in and leaving themselves ways to alter things in the future should they want/need to.

I have a feeling the inclusion of this character may have been what caused the rift with Edgar and Marvel. She was not cast until the new director and writers took over. There is most likely a reason she was included that ties into the larger universe and is why Marvel wanted the character in and possibly Wright not. Just a guess though.
