Did Disney LIE To UK Fans About Not Editing The Home Release Of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE?

In a new statement released by the studio about the controversy surrounding the UK release of Avengers Assemble on DVD and Blu-ray, they contradict earlier comments than the version on disc was the same version that was released in cinemas. Read on for details.

As well as having less special features and there being no sign of Joss Whedon's "Director's Commentary", fans were baffled by the decision to edit Agent Coulson's death scene in the UK home release of Avengers Assemble (read more about that by clicking HERE). It may not sound like a big deal, but as I've already mentioned here on CBM, it completely changes the impact of what is arguably one of THE most pivotal scenes in the film. On Monday, Disney UK's home entertainment spokesperson Lydia Rodrigues said the following.

"There’s been no censorship, no foul play. The version of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble on Blu-ray disc in the UK is the same as the version shown theatrically. It really is. The simple fact is for a 12 certificate film in the UK, that scene was deemed inappropriate. So Marvel Studios chose to remove the spear tip digitally."

Seems fair, right? Wrong. Bleeding Cool reached out to Disney for a statement about the controversy which currently surrounds the film and were told that, "another region’s elements were inadvertently used to create the UK in home release which minimally altered this scene in the film. We thank our fans for their vigilance in recognizing this and apologize for the mix up." So, it seems fair to assume from reading this that the studio blatantly lied to fans about it being the same cut that was released in cinemas. It's already shocking enough that they have suggested that fans should import copies of Marvel's The Avengers from the US (a far more expensive option than buying it on this side of the pond) and they have so far offered no sort of re-issue or replacement scheme. A poor way to treat those who contributed over $80 million to its worldwide box office.

Of course, it's not just the UK who have been affected by this as several other territories across Europe will have also received the incorrectly edited version. It remains to be seen whether US fans have anything to worry about, but this will surely make most fans wish Paramount Pictures were still distributing Marvel Studios' films!

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures Marvel’s The Avengers--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

RELEASE DATE: September 17th, 2012 (UK) September 25th, 2012 (US)

Is this all because of the spear being visible or not visible ? Does it matter so much how deep he sticks the spear ? are you so hungry for violence that you need to see it again? I mean come on it's not like they changed the chrysler building to big ben or something

So in the UK version of TASM The Lizard's claw wont be seen going through Captain Stacy's body?
Stupid.

The spear does not really matter, the lack of the extras and the way the UK & Europe have been treated is a disgrace. We're better of downloading a full, uncut version which is a real shame.

I live in New Zealand and it's been out here on DVD and blu ray since the end of last month (no idea why we got it so much sooner than the US and Europe?). I bought the blu ray triple play version (blu ray/blu ray 3D/digital copy) and it seems we have the unedited version. I must say, for a movie as big as it was, I am extremely disappointed with the lack of extras. A rather pathetically brief "visual journey" of the making of the film, a gag reel and a few decent deleted scenes. The one shot isn't too bad but come on Marvel, this movie should at least had a lengthy making of and featurettes on bringing the Hulk to life, creating the costumes etc. You'll obviously have to buy the phase one box set to get all that stuff.

Having had this pointed out in earlier articles when I watched the dvd I couldnt help but notice the difference as I can recall seeing it in the cinema.
It doesnt change the film the only matter of concern is that they cant seem to get their story straight

Of course they blatantly lied to us. Everybody who saw it in the UK saw that spearhead come thru Coulson's chest. I'm actually surprised they had the chutzpah to actually lie outright when they knew they'd be outed sooner rather than later. Corporations, eh? Lol.

i'm more pissed at the lack of extra's,don't get me wrong the deleted scenes & item 47 were good but i want more.

also i would of never relized the tip of the spear was missing if you guys hadn't pointed it out.

It's Disney and no one else.
The John Carter bluray only had all the special features on a 2 disc version only available at one store (at least here in Australia)
And War Horse which was released through Touchstone and it also had a bloody 2 disc bluray but you can only buy that with the dvds and digital copy so retailers charge $50+ for it.
It's ridiculous, Disney are the worst at releasing home video. What's the point of buying a bluray disc with so much storage if you aren't even going to use the disc to it's full capacity?
And you guys in the UK got stiffed. You could import our version of it. I got it for $25 AUD which would be like 16 pounds.

Yep, I live in Oz, and I think the extra's on the triple pack where pretty piss poor, a 5 min doco, gag reel, and the one shot, pretty pissed off really, so I ordered the bluray from Amazon US, ka ching, more $'s for Disney, and they wonder why people download off the Internet!

I don't care about the spear that much, I care more that they lied to us about what we saw with our own two eyes. I bet it made some people think "Hmm, maybe I didn't see the spear like I thought..." that's freaking gaslighting and it's not ok.

I think i heard that Disney UK rep say in an interview tha t the U.S. Version is not region coded. So for those of you who don't own it or have yet to buy it over there, just import the American version. Sure, you will pay a little extra, but ultimately, you'll get the stuff that you want so bad.

Why is the only option that they LIED, in overly dramatic all caps? Seems like a misunderstanding to me, where the spokesman told the truth about why the spear tip was missing, but was incorrect in saying that was the version shown in UK theaters. Apparently the censored version was made for another market and accidentally used in the cutting of the UK release.

Nothing sinister or nefarious about it.

At least this clears it up! Glad its not Disney trying to 'kid-ify' Marvel in the end... just a stupid mistake from the studio.

Actually, Paramount did distribute the film in the UK, I have my copy right next to me and the Paramount logo is clearly displayed on the spine of the cover, while the credit notes on the back also state that 'MARVEL STUDIOS presents in association with PARAMOUNT PICTURES...'

So perhaps Paramount are the ones who screwed up, or may be at least partly to blame.

With regards to the contradictory statements, the first was issued by a spokesperson for Disney who clearly didn't give a crap about what was being said by the fans, and didn't do her research before making a statement that has now come around and bit them all on their asses.

I really do hope Disney does something to make this up to fans, like offering a free replacement scheme similar to another film (I think it was Gladiator?). And at this point it'd be nice to think that Disney would replace it with the US version, complete with the Director's Commentary and extra features, as a way of making it up to us. I think it'd be the decent thing to do.
