Shareholders for The Walt Disney Co. and 21st Century Fox voted this morning on whether or not to approve the former's $71.3 billion acquisition of Fox's film and TV assets and it's good news: the deal has been approved! With things now wrapped up, Disney will take charge of their big and small screen studios, not to mention certain cable and international businesses which the company currently owns.
Fox, meanwhile, will still continue on in a very different form with a portfolio of news, sports, and broadcast companies, including the Fox News Channel, Fox Sports, and a variety of similar channels.
The most exciting news for fans is the fact that this means Marvel properties like the X-Men and Fantastic Four are coming home to Marvel Studios and will arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point in the next few years. The studio has also gained the theatrical and home video rights to the original Star Wars movies as well as franchises like Planet of the Apes, Avatar, and many more.
The U.S. Department of Justice has already approved the Disney/Fox merger, provided the media and entertainment company divest the 22 regional sports networks it was set to gain in the deal. How do you guys feel about this news? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on that down below.
