IESB is reporting that occasional actor, and creator and head writer of the television programs Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse, Joss Whedon is on the list of guys to direct Marvel's hero clash, The Avengers.

IESB also says that not only that he may be a contender, but also in the lead. Louis leterrier spoke of this list before, stating that he(louis) was on the list as well, but against bigger names. Joss is currently writing & producing "Cabin In The Woods", which stars Chris Hemsworth(Thor). There is no official word on Joss, so IESB is looking into it.

Whedon wrote Astonishing X-Men in Marvel Comics' The title, recreated specifically for Whedon, has been one of Marvel's best-selling comics as of 2006 and was nominated for several Eisner Awards including Best Serialized Story, Best Continuing Series, Best New Series and Best Writer, winning the Best Continuing Series award in 2006. One storyline from this comic, the notion of a cure for mutation being found, was also an element in the third X-Men film, X-Men: The Last Stand. Whedon also introduced several new characters into the Marvel Universe such as the villainous Ord, X-Men Ruth "Blindfold" Aldine and Hisako "Armor" Ichiki, Runaway Klara Prast and Special Agent Abigail Brand, along with S.W.O.R.D., the organization she commands.

Source? I really hope not. And are you allowed to preface your prank by saying "Not an April Fool's Joke"? Seems like cheating.

I loved Firefly, Serenity and his run on Astonishing X-Men so I for one hope that this is true! :)

@Tea the time slot was not the only issue Fox aired the episodes out of order so it made it hard to follow.

Teabag me ol mucker, Firefly would have soared if it was kept on air, you may have found it mediocre but millions didn't. In fact, I have never spoken to anyone that watched the series on dvd and didn't love it..but there ya go! I can't understand how anyone thinks stuff like Chuck is watchable. Different strokes.

This is a legit story fellas, unfortunate that it lands on April Fools day but it seems to be the real deal..or at least, a real rumor! I would love to see it happen.

I should preface this by saying I won't believe this until I see its still posted tomorrow.

I loved Buffy, Firefly and I even thought dollhouse was a cool concept as well. So, needless to say, I'm a fan of Whedon. BUT I'm not quite sure if he's the man for the job. I still think Favs is perfect.

I don't know obviously, but considering the following it gained even while on tv at different time slots, with episodes shown out of sequence and little to no advertising behind it, isn't it a safe bet that if it kept running with even a bit of backing from the network that it would have gained more viewers? SP, again, different strokes, it wasn't your thing. But I think the reason that Whedon gets put on a pedestal is because he is one of the few writers and directors that manages to mix a lot of different tones and still pull of great characterization. If those Star Wars prequels had half the heart of Serenity they would have been twice the movies they were.

I know this is BS but if there is one thing Joss has, it's experience directing ensemble ccasts... it'd never happen of course but him directing Avengers wouldn't be the worst news ever...

... this would've been funnier if you'd put that Brett Ratner was the front-runner to direct. lol

haha, Tea, let Letterier near it and they'l be DUMB ass comments..which would you prefer? Although I doubt either of em will end up directing it.

This is looking pretty legit to me. I like Whedon a lot, but this seems to be an odd pairing to me. Not sure how I feel.

Ror & Tea- I really don't know, aside from Favreau, who i'd like to see film Avengers. But it sure as hell ain't Whedon or Leterrier. I "like" what they've done but i'm not a mega fan of them enough for me to promote them for this.

Eh, I could live with Whedon. Don't know if this is legit or another April Fool's joke.

I agree, Leterrier is overrated. TIH was great, but the guy is lacking in character development, drama, depth. This is THE Marvel movie. Not A Marvel movie. I think a more proven director is needed.

all i can say is that I haven't been anticipating a film that much since 1999, waiting for the phantom menace to hit! back in the days, I used to daydream of seeing Anakin Skywalker in flesh, or witnessing the early days of Palpatine's political run and now I'm all about AVENGERS, I got this picture in my head, Robert Downey JR in full Stark mode with suit, stach and style, followed by Ed Norton as Banner, with oversized purple sweating pants, an american hat and a hoodie that gives away the fact that he's a runnaway, Chris Hemsworth with a cape, trying to cover his Asgardian gear and hyding Mjöllnir behind his back and finally Chris Evans as Private Rogers, with spikey blond hair and military medals... all four of them, side by side // CAMERA PANS OUT // they're on a huge american aircraft carrier // CAMERA PANS OUT EVEN MORE // we seew a massive S.H.I.E.L.D logo at the stern... WOW! won't be able to wait that long...
