Thanks to cincinnati.com, we now have a little more information about the estimated budget of the 2012 summer superhero blockbuster along with a few more details about filming in Ohio:

Kristen Erwin, who is the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Film Commission executive director, has stated that The Avengers will have an estimated budget of $170 million and will be spending about $30 million in Ohio alone.

Erwin also stated that they will shoot in Ohio for two weeks. She could not reveal an exact location, but did say that it would be within 30 miles of Cincinnati and that they're "still negotiation a location agreement" with Marvel Studios.

In short, Cleveland and Southwestern Ohio will be the two main spots for filming of The Avengers when they visit the state.

170 isn't that much compared to other films. The Dark Knight cost more than that and that had barely any CGI. Green Lantern is costing more than that. And with the problems going on in the SFX companies these days, I wouldn't be surprised if they havew to go over budget.

WTF? That's not a lot for something this big. Spider-Man 3 cost over 250 million alone.
tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 5/8/2011, 12:38 PM
Well, Spider-Man 3 was the second sequel, with several returning actors and a director that had large salaries. As well as the the massive amount of CG used to create Spider-Man, Venom and Sandman.Of course it's budget would be significantly larger.

oh no there budgets only 170 million, the movies doomed :/ (thats sarcasm by the way)

Hellsing - 5/8/2011, 12:41 PM
@dynamo yeah TDK only cost 15 million more and that was sequel to a successful film, green lantern has a budget of 150 million, I heard wb upped it by 9 million so the avengers has bigger budget.

I don't understand what were people expecting, its not exactly going to have avatar size budget now is it. Any ways long as i get to see thor vs hulk I am cool

Personally, I think it's plenty. The tax incentive that they are receiving in Ohio probably helped reduce the budget a bit, but that's just my guess.

When are they filming in Ohio?

$170 million should be enough,i was hoping for $200-$250 million.

but it should still look pretty good for that money.

Joss Whedon is great with manging small budgets. And District 9 only had a budget of 30 million and had great CGI. Sunshine only had a budget of 26 million and beautiful effects. Better than most high budget movies.

Personally, I don't think that a high budget always constitutes a high-quality movie. In my opinion, Spider-Man 3 was a perfect example of that.
Dynamo
Dynamo - 5/8/2011, 1:00 PM
I'm not worrying, or saying it'll be crap. I just thought it'd be more expensive. And it probably will be. The reason GL's budget was increased wasn't just to finish the CGI, but because SFX have been over booked with the number of blockbusters coming out (more true of next year than this year) that they're rushing to get it finished.

marvel is again going cheap.sure they probably saved some money on sets, designs and other things, but still this kind of project deserves a lot more.iron man, iron man 2 and hulk all lacked on action.thor was an improvement, but still to little for a character like thor.
warner is giving almost 250 mill on green lantern, they gave superman more then 200 mill in 2006,tdk was 185 mill, tdkr probably over 220,230 mill.and new superman film will probably have around 170 mill if not more.
sure whedon can make this look a lot bigger, but we will just have to wait and see.i just hope we are in for something spectacular...

marvel studios budgets so far.

-iron man $140,000,000
-the incredible hulk $150,000,000
-iron man 2 $200,000,000
-thor $150,000,000
-captain america the first avenger $140,000,000

i personally think the avengers will go up $200,000,000+,if they spent that kind of money on iron man 2.

they'll have to up it for the avengers.

guys, it's joss whedon. the man made "serinity" look like it was made for far more than for what it actually cost to make it. lol

i think if you take into consideration the budgets for the other team franchise the x-men love em or hate them.

these are the x-men budgets

x-men $75,000,000
x-men 2 $110,000,000
x-men 3 $210,000,000
x-men first class $ (not sure)
kurekurcubic
kurekurcubic - 5/8/2011, 2:10 PM
first class is at 120 mill actually
wolverine was 150 mill(more like 130 in my opinion)
jazzman
jazzman - 5/8/2011, 2:46 PM
@marvel72

the different is Iron Man 2 was a sequel of cause the budget will go up for that movie. this is the very first Avengers film so it makes sense the budget is about 170 million. if Avengers does well the sequel budget will most likely goes up.
kurekurcubic
kurekurcubic - 5/8/2011, 3:02 PM
but the avengers isnt a regular very first movie.it features characters that already had 6 movies combined before
marvel72
marvel72 - 5/8/2011, 3:08 PM
@ jazzman

yeah you're probably right, comparing them with the x-men movies you can roughly see what you'll get for your money.

The first Transformers movie had $150 million and it looked really good. So I'm sure the Avengers will be fine.

If they do indeed do the skrulls it will be for two reasons....
1. Budget. All they really have to do is make a few actual skrull costumes and then use a little CGI to make a few thousand skrull soldiers appear on the screen.
2. To screw over FOX. Skrulls have fought The Avengers but are traditionally a FF set of villains.

According to Joss Whedon FOX only has the rights to "Super Skrull"

Isn't the Avengers a Disney production anyway? And don't they have a ton of money?
ckirk8
ckirk8 - 5/8/2011, 4:50 PM
@MrNoFear With all due respect, I can't quite comprehend why you're so offended over this. Fox has no plans to bring the Fantastic Four back to the movies any time soon, and perhaps it was Fox's decision to just obtain Super Skrull and not the entire Skrull race.

@Kurkurcubic...I agree. This isn't just a typical "first movie". This movie is a third in some lines, and a second in others. If you consider the budgets of each individual movie...this should be WAY more than a 170 mil.

Considering CGI on EVERY character, and especially if they're going the Skrull route...they need to up the ante. This is just the first estimation..but..a movie like this..I'm calling LATE 200s.

They could probably save money by having the Skrulls be actors in makeup instead of completely CGI. Alot of the money is probably going towards animating the Hulk and Iron Man. But since this is Marvel's only film next year, they should be willing to spend the dough. Unless they try to make Ant-Man.
