THE AVENGERS Voted Most Overrated Movie Of 2012 In LA Times Poll

Marvel's superhero ensemble flick may have gone down a treat with most fans and critics, but a vocal majority of LA Times readers felt that it has been overrated, in fact the MOST overrated movie of 2012. Read on for more details..

According to the respondents to a Times online survey, Joss Whedon's epic superhero smash hit is the most overrated feature film of 2012. The movie scored a whopping 85% of votes, with Ridley Scott's Prometheus coming in second with just over 4%. The rest of the movies in order were Brave, Ted, Project X, The Master and Cloud Atlas.



Project X is overrated? Doesn't a movie have to be rated first! Anyway, what do you guys make of this? I always found the term "overrated" to be misapplied in a lot of cases, but there is no doubt that The Avengers was very well thought of by the majority of fans and critics, and thus would always be in line for some backlash. Personally I think the film barely puts a foot wrong in any department, but each to their own. I am surprised by the vast number of votes though, and as big a fan of the movie as I am, I'm VERY surprised that The Dark Knight Rises didn't make the list at all

Must have taken a lot of heavy thinking to come to this conclusion. Hmm, what was the most overrated movie of 2012? Well, lets see... What was the biggest movie, critically and commercially and the most popular? Oh The Avengers on all counts. Well then, that must have been the most overrated movie of 2012 then.
Fvck me. There's some real brains working at the LA Times, aren't there?
Except, it really isn't a film that strikes me as overrated at all, despite the fact that it is indeed highly rated. I think the reason it's so popular is that it knew what it's audience wanted to see and it gave it to them. It is a blockbuster with the same tone and creative drive as quite a lot of popular movies, from Star Wars, through Independance Day right up to The Avengers. Whenever a film like this comes out it gets the proper response. This is what a summer event movie should be. Big, fun and lovable. So, yeah, not really overrated, I wouldn't say.

All you have to do to find the real overrated film is find out which one wasn't put on the list at all, despite making it huge at the box office and faring a little worse with critics.

Argo.
The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn Part 2.
Skyfall.
Looper.
And don't get me wrong, four of those are really good movies and the first two are in my top 10 of the year, but they were all a little bit overrated.
Twilight, of course is the one bad one up there. I saw that film. Only one I've ever seen and just... just wtf? This is the franchise that defined the last generation. Seriously?

Seriously, I'm surprised at this. On my facebook timeline when The Avengers came out, I saw nothing but people saying that they can't wait to see The Avengers, or they're getting ready to see it again. And, No, they're not comics fans. I haven't seen people this crazy about a CBM on my facebook page since TDK.

and how are the other movies OVERRATED? Prometheus' reception was 50% love/50% hate,Brave's reception was lukewarm,nobody liked Project X besides teenagers,Cloud Atlas had also a lukewarm reception.

I can definitelly see TED as a more fitting movie worthy of the "overrated" title,haven't seen The Master.

but The Avengers? bah,each to their own. MARVEL promised an action/adventure superhero movie and that's exactly what they delivered,anyone expecting Citizen Kane levels of art were out of their minds.

TDKR is not in this list because, unlike with The Avengers, no one is saying it's 'the best CBM ever' (or almost no one). The Avengers was great, yes, but it had a lot of flaws that many fans just refuse to see. Also, it has a slightly more vocal fanbase than TDKR (and TASM doesn't really have die-hard fans). Anyways, it's hardly a masterpiece, and the same goes for TDKR and TASM, so please don't kill me for thinking that (?) :P

I can kinda understand how people who don't follow the genre might think that The Avengers was overrated. I thought The Avengers was awesome but comic book movies are probably my favorite kind of film.

La times has no clue what they are talking about; if i recall correctly last year the help was on their list of most overrated the year before that they called inception the most overrated film...so clearly they give us Los Angelinos a bad name especially when they write utter stupidity

I find TDKR to be incredibly overrated. I think its a good movie, but i think had it been a less respected director than chris nolan, it wouldn't be as highly regarded as it is, and the problems with the movie wouldn't go slide as easily as they do. And this is coming from a guy who loves his first 2 batman movies and the other movies he has done like inception and memento, which I find to be one of the most fascinating movies I've ever seen.

Avengers is my favorite CBM of 2012, but I could care less if someone says its "overrated". That's their opinion.

Also, I have a feeling some people here are gonna use this article as an excuse to attack Marvel and its fans. Unfortunately, that's how things work around here.
