In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Zach Whedon was discussing the chances of a sequel to the two's online musical, Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, when he let slip the following information that is yet further indication that Joss will indeed be in the directors chair for the mighty Marvel team up movie, The Avengers!

"We are all anxious to work on it, but some of us - and I'm not pointing any fingers here - but some of us have tentatively agreed to helm an all-star mega-blockbuster summer tent-pole extravaganza movie to be released in 2012."

Now, the words "tentatively agreed" may not point to the Buffy and Firefly creator actually being confirmed as having the job but it definitely indicates that he's still in the running as do recent comments from the likes of Chris Hemsworth (Thor) who said he had actually met Joss Whedon to discuss the movie.

The Avengers will assemble in cinemas on May 4, 2012!

Hahaha, I liked how Zack described The Avengers. Oh well, I guess it's pretty official now so you better bring it Joss!

Yeah, I thought Chris Hemsworth confirmed this when he had stated that he met with Joss to discuss the movie. I guess this is just more confirmation.

hells yeah...i get even more excited every time i hear joss whedon's name and the avengers movie mentioned in the same paragraph. i still think Hulk should be a minor "villain/bad guy" in the movie and if Marvel can get their guns blazing and get back some of their old properties (ex. X-men, Spider-man, etc) i'd love to see a lead up to a New Avengers movie (possibly following a Civil War movie)...ahh the possibilities

Great! I was a little unsure about Joss Whedon when I first heard the news but once I read Astonishing X-Men which I originally missed when back in 2008 or whatever I knew he was a brilliant pick for director especially as Im a huge fan of his work on shows like Angel Firefly and Buffy!!

MikeSanderson09: Lol, thanks - just sorted that mistake out! :P

LEE: Thanks bud!

I've only watched Whedon's Firefly and Serenity but his directing and handling of a large cast in both of those has me feeling pretty good about him helming The Avengers. That and the fact that his run on Astonishing X-Men proves how great he is at portraying a brilliant ensemble comic book character team!

I think he is the right pick, his tv shows have always had a nice mix of drama and comedy flashes to keep it together and not going over the top

Why don't they just officially announce it already. Everyone else involved has pretty much said he is directing.

Whedon is perfect for the Avengers. Not much more I can say than what i have said on the topic in the past. Whedon is great at developing a cast of misfit characters and though there are rivalries and disagreements, he still has this ability to make them look like a team that works well together, despite their differences. That's what the Avengers needs.

If Marvel tells him to hold back on the comedy, then I would imagine he will do so. The beauty of Whedon's direction in delivering comedic lines is that they are real things people would actually say. I love in Firefly when Shepherd asks if he can say grace and Mal non-chalantly says, "not at all, as long as you don't say it out loud". There were so many great lines that one could laugh at that were delivered in a non-cheesy way in Firefly and Serenity.

I think Wheedon is about as good a director for Avengers as we could hope for. i'll be happy if they would just make it official already though.

If Joss has John Cassaday storyboarding this as well, then I'm definitely all in! in fact, a Whedon/Cassaday comic tie-in to the Avengers movie would be a license to print money..Somebody wake up Joe Quesada!

Whedon is awesome. His direction experience of large ensemble casts is one of the reasons that The Avengers will be an EPIC adventure of never before seen Comic Book Movie Goodness. Fanboy (& Girl) Joygasms will Abound!!!

JOSS WHEDON Rules! Firefly and Buffy are both excellent. I think I am going to have to buy Firefly and Serenity on BlueRay. Morena Baccarin is even more beautiful in HD.

Anil@ Whedon won't be deciding who is being killed off in the Avengers. He is being hired to direct the movie as Marvel and the script presents itself. He simply is the one to make it "come alive". I love the fact that Whedon has characters killed off at surprising moments. It makes it more real and I like the emotional conflict. JJ Abrams did the same thing with Lost. Different strokes for different folks.

I gotta say I'm excited about Joss Whedon potentially directing the Avengers movie. He's the perfect man for the job. His experience in the comic book medium is extensive, and his stengths are in balancing characters in an ensemble environment, as well as the perfect mixture of comedy and action. He'll adapt to each style the previous solo-film directors have established before him, and deliver a unified and satisfying product that will keep fans of all the individual characters happy and true to the continuity that will be handed to him. Kudos to Marvel for seeing him as the perfect choice for this project.
