Christopher Nolan Talks In Detail About THE DARK KNIGHT RISES' Eight Year Gap, Bane And More

The director talks in a huge amount of detail about The Dark Knight Rises including a Batman "who has been frozen in this moment in time with nowhere to go" for eight years, the choice of Bane as villain, shooting the prologue and more.

Talking to Geoff Boucher over at Hero Compex, director Christopher Nolan has taken part in one of his most revealing interviews yet in regards to The Dark Knight Rises. Below are just some of the most interesting highlights, including the reason behind the eight year gap between the events of The Dark Knight and the upcoming third instalment of the critically acclaimed franchise. Read on for more and be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

On How He Feels About Batman's Intense Fan Base:

"It’s terrific, to have people that interested in something. It reminds you that it is a real honor to work on something that means so much to people. I’d love to be able to claim that I invented the whole thing and that’s why they’re interested. I did not. I’ve been given a very precious thing to do my best with, to look after and not to let people down. There’s a certain amount of fear that comes with it and intimidation but it’s also a great privilege. [As for the fans], they want it to be great, they want to go enjoy it and they’re fascinated by it. You know, there’s always controversy regarding things that people will disagree with but hopefully they appreciate the effort of trying to make something good."

On Shooting The Six Minute Opening Sequence:

"We had a lot of fun on it. It was a tricky sequence to shoot but a lot of very talented people worked very hard on it. And I’m thrilled with the result. We shot it in Scotland. We braved the weather — it rains all the time there, a terrible place to do an aerial sequence, which is why no one has sort of done it before. You usually wind up in the desert or something for very practical reasons. But it really came off. We got very lucky with the weather and a lot of good planning went into it. I think it had a very unique look."

On What Makes Bane Such An Effective Villain:

"With Bane, the physicality is the thing. With a good villain you need an archetype, you know, you need the extreme of some type of villainy. The Joker is obviously a particular archetype of diabolical, chaotic anarchy and has a devilish sense of humor. Bane, to me, is something we haven’t dealt with in the films. We wanted to do something very different in this film. He’s a primarily physical villain, he’s a classic movie monster in a way — but with a terrific brain. I think he’s a fascinating character. I think people are going to get a kick out of what we’ve done with him."

On The Eight Year Gap Between The Dark Knight And The Dark Knight Rises:

"It will make a lot more sense to people when they see the film. But it’s not a great mystery — it’s the jumping-off point for the film — but it’s hard for me to articulate it. I think the mood at the beginning of the film will make a lot of sense. If I had to express it thematically, I think what we’re saying is that for Batman and Commissioner Gordon, there’s a big sacrifice, a big compromise, at the end of the ‘The Dark Knight’ and for that to mean something, that sacrifice has to work and Gotham has to get better in a sense. They have to achieve something for the ending of that film — and the feeling at the end of that film — to have validity. Their sacrifice has to have meaning and it takes time to establish that and to show that, and that’s the primary reason we did that. It’s a time period that is not so far ahead that we would have to do crazy makeup or anything — which I think would be distracting — but it gave them something to get their teeth into, particularly Christian in terms of [portraying] this guy who has been frozen in this moment in time with nowhere to go. He really has done an incredible job figuring out how to characterize that and express that."

On What It Was Like To Film His Final Batman Movie:

"I tend not to be too emotional on the set, I find that doesn’t help me do my job. But you definitely get a little lump in your throat thinking that, ‘OK, this is going to be the last time we’re going to be doing this.’ It’s been quite a journey. Hopefully, reflecting that journey — by all of us who made the films — in the three film."

Of course, there's much more to this interview (including Nolan's decision to choose Bane as the villain in The Dark Knight Rises and filming the final scenes with actors Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and Michael Caine) but you'll have to click on the link below to check it out in its entirety.

so that's the reason for the time gap, to give the sacrifice time to sink in.

If you can't get your head around ACTORS playing different CHARACTERS,then the failing is with you mate, not Nolan. If all you see is the actor, then you're not really watching the movie!

sounds like he's got it under control. Hopfully the TDKR will blow my mind and be one the best batman movies ever, instead of joining the crappy third movie pile like spiderman 3.

AsianVersionOfET - 12/12/2011, 4:37 PM
I'm so sad...:( but it needs to end! If the third movie is amazing (which it will be) this will be one of, if not THE best trilogies ever made. Right up there with LoTR and The Bourne trilogy!

"You know, there’s always controversy regarding things that people will disagree with but hopefully they appreciate the effort of trying to make something good."

I appreciate it. So far I agree with most of his choices. His Batman is the closest thing we have to the actual comics on film.

Actually no. Marvel / Avengers fan wouldnt be too fond of Nolan's "realism" incorporated in the Avengers "extensive" world. Maybe with darker, street-level characters like Daredevil or the Punisher, then he'd be good with those. But not something like the Avengers

Fishandchips - 12/12/2011, 4:41 PM
@MrReese - granted at least he isnt doing a schumacher on us. Except for the size of him, I think he is done really well, but he's hardly a genius making bane intelligent like hes ment to be, it is just common sense.

Anyways I am looking forward to this

man of steel and ASM most anticipated
This and avengers a very close second, 2012 is gonna be a good year for CBM's

(also before anyone says, I'm aware that MoS isn't definately getting released next year)

mikenew - 12/12/2011, 4:45 PM
We can't judge a book by its cover. Everyone kept getting on their high horse about how horrible Bane was going to me. Personally, I knew Nolan wasn't going to let the fans down. Right now, the same people who claimed Bane was going to ruin the film did a 360.
MrReese
MrReese - 12/12/2011, 4:46 PM
@0SageMode0
I dont think Nolan would approach the Avengers like how he did Batman theyre 2 different stories."Realism" works 4 Batman bcuz he has no superpowers.
N Y do ppl say Nolan is all bout "realism" when movie like Inception was far the [frick] away from it :/

Christopher Nolan has created the perfect Bane.

I wonder what he has in store for Selina Kyle.

Wow you can tell he really cares about Batman and his story. By the looks if it he really respects Batman and doesn't want to let the fans down.

golden123 - 12/12/2011, 4:50 PM
@MrReese: Understanding the character of Bane doesn't make Nolan a genius, it just further shows how much of an imbecile Shumacher and co were while working on "Batman & Robin".
Supes17
Supes17 - 12/12/2011, 4:54 PM
Just because he used realism with Batman doesn't mean that he would apply it to every hero.
With Batman, he wanted to show the audience something believable, as if he could really exist in real life. Yes, you have to suspend your disbelief here and there, but I think he nailed it. I think Batman works best in a realistic setting.
He took a different approach with Man of Steel.

I just like to hear the guy talk. He seems really cool. I can't wait for this. Whoever said this will blow everything out of the water next year is totally right.

@Fishandchips: All the movies you mentioned have official release dates already out. The Man of Steel won't be coming out until June 14, 2013. It is official.

@0SageMode0: Why do you think Nolan is narrow minded? Why do you think he can only make one type of movie? Why do you think Nolan isn't a flexible director? He's only directed seven movies so far, and they haven't all been the same style. Why can't directors reach out and try something new?
