JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX Will Be A "Jukebox Musical" With Over A Dozen "Very Well-Known" Cover Songs

New details about Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux plans have been revealed today, including the fact the sequel will be a "jukebox musical" packed with familiar songs. You can find more details here...

We've been hearing rumblings for a while now that Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical and, with a trailer expected to drop in the near future, Variety has just shared more details about what DC fans can expect from the sequel.

According to the trade, the movie is "mostly a jukebox musical" which includes at least 15 new versions of "very well-known" songs. Among them is Judy Garland's "That's Entertainment" from The Band Wagon (1953), though it's said a couple of original songs will likely be added.

It's unclear who will write or perform those, but with Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn, we'd say she's a safe bet!

The report adds that Hildur Guðnadóttir, Joker's Oscar-winning composer, has "[infused her distinctive, haunting [music] cues" into each of the current musical numbers, so we're definitely intrigued to hear how they'll differ.

To clarify, jukebox musicals are known for featuring popular songs instead of original tracks, with Mamma Mia! and Moulin Rouge! the two most successful examples. Perhaps acquiring the rights to these songs explains why the budget for Joker: Folie à Deux is said to have ballooned to $200 million, a massive difference from its $60 million predecessor.

We've previously heard that the sequel will take place primarily in Arkham Asylum, with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) meeting a kindred spirit in fellow patient Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga). That's a departure from the comic books, but we're not exactly surprised considering the fact 2019's Joker was very much an Elseworlds story as well.

However, with set photos showing both Arthur and Harley on the loose in Gotham City, we're guessing there will come a point where they're freed to wreak havoc.

It's going to be interesting to find out where Phillips plans on taking this franchise. Bruce Wayne's parents were gunned down by a man dressed like a clown, and the stage was set for him to also go off the deep end and become a "Batman" eager to take his revenge on Fleck.

We're guessing it's still a little too soon for that, but have no doubt Joker: Folie à Deux will have some surprises in store for us. As the only DC movie being released in 2024, expectations are high and Warner Bros. is surely banking on this being a huge critical and commercial hit that helps usher in DC Studios' new era of storytelling with the DCU and future "Elseworlds" tales like The Batman II.

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024, exactly five years after Joker debuted.

That makes sense. If they are going to break out into a song, the song needs to be one they are familiar with.

@LSHF - I read break out with a song at first, and that honestly makes sense too. If it's even a prison break out and not a fantasy in their shared mind

@bkmeijer1 - Good point.

It's going to be interesting to see how they are going to do all of singing scenes.

Good.

@Doomsday8888 - Her music was the only thing that stopped the last movie from seeming like a cheap exploitative revenge flick.

Music is a powerful tool if used well, people should realize that.

Still, i would give some credit to Phoenix as well. :P

@Doomsday8888 - Of course, absolutely. Some of his best work is in Joker.

@Doomsday8888 - agreed. I think this is very daring but, if it works out, it'll go over great with the audience.

@Doomsday8888 - "Music is a powerful tool if used well, people should realize that."

you have no idea the power behind that statement you just posted. Coming from a professional musician, writer, performer, and educator, music can make or break people's lives.

If you're biblical, then it might surprise you who used to be the music-man in Heaven.

@Doomsday8888 - Done well music can add so much, to this day I'd argue one of the most memorable Batman scenes ever was of the Joker using music as intrinsically part of the action rather than just background soundtrack without which the scene could easily be forgettable.

Now, having a full blown musical jukebox thing rather than just a few scenes of breaking into a musical of some form can go horribly wrong even if in some cases (like Moulin Rouge and Mama Mia) has been brilliant.

Time will tell how they use the musical aspects and if it works or not.

So that's a song every 8 minutes? That's a lot. Or not. I don't know, I haven't watch any jukebox musical really.

@bkmeijer1 -
Depends on the musical, sometimes they do go rather ham with the music.

Hamilton has 46 songs over 2hr 45m for example - which is one every 3.6* minutes.
IAmAHoot
IAmAHoot - 3/23/2024, 11:23 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I have to imagine they're not all going to be full renditions of the songs, if any of them. And there may likely be some sort of medley at one point, where they start one song and then suddenly jump it into another and another.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/23/2024, 12:50 PM
@Scarilian @IAmAHoot - yeah, I'm guessing it's gonna be smaller parts of songs & and medley here there instead of full songs to progress the narrative in musicals like Hamilton.

Don’t know if I like the idea of that. I’m really a fan of Jukebox Musicals. I hated Mamma Mia.

I wonder how this is going to play with the people that really loved the first one. My guess is not well with a large number of them but I’m interested to see. I however love jukebox musicals and musicals in general so I doubt I end up liking it less than the first one.

In the same way that Joaquin Phoenix was basically the main creative on the last one, it looks like Lady Gaga is the the main creative on this one.

She gets to dress up as Harley Quinn and sing her favorite show tunes.

Honestly , the only reason I’m somewhat interested in this since I didn’t care much for the first one is the musical aspect of it…

It’s such an intriguing & risky decision from the first film but also makes sense since music & dancing were already a part of the original film.

I hope it works out for the best (even though I would have preferred original songs then a jukebox musical).
