Paul Franklin, visual effects supervisor for both of director Christopher Nolan's 'Batman' revisions, as well the highly-anticipated The Dark Knight Rises, recently caught up with Screen Junkies. Sharing insight on the VFX of the third film, and Nolan's particular way of film-making, check it out below.

On whether actress Anne Hathaway would be digitalized of some sort for her feline role as Selina Kyle, “No, no, not at all,” Franklin said. “We always start something like this trying to keep it as real as possible. We would only ever resort to digital doubles for some stunt moments or things like that. We try to keep them real. That’s the way Chris likes to make a film.”

On whether Tom Hardy's 'Bane' would require any CGI, Franklin says, “You’d have to ask Chris. I think he has his plan but we’re at a very, very early stage on the picture at the moment. Obviously Two-Face was an example of fantastic digital prosthetic. They put tracking markers on Aaron Eckhart’s face and replaced one side of his face with CG. So that obviously had to be a digital thing but it’s based on a real performance. Aaron was delivering the lines, giving the performance.”

“We try to keep it different every time. There might be a few things, maybe features of Gotham City that will turn up again to give it some sort of visual continuity. Obviously we’ll try and keep some sort of thematic style with that but really, it’s a film in its own right.”

Starring Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and the recently announced Joseph Gordon-Levitt, The Dark Knight Rises in theaters July 20, commencing filming in May.

The less CGI, the better the movie will be. I mean does anybody really want a CGI Bane, I mean he isn't foinf to be 7 foot I mean Hardy was in Bronson in which he looked massive and with3 inch boots he will be 6 foot tall and will look bigger than Bale due to how big his muscles will be. Bale and Hardy is going to be great like Bale said Hardy is a balls out guy like him

Yeah, there was loads in the schumacher films. In fact, I think Batman Forever was the first film to utilise motion capture technology. They even transcribed it into the activision tie-in game, if I recall. It looks like we will get a CG Bane.
I like how nobody can keep the Catwoman thing a secret.

The director will probably use CGI for Bane. I mean, he uses it when he needs to..
Remember Two-Face in TDK, all CGI, and it looked remarkable by the way

two-face was great but i just don't think BANE needs it.the oversized body structure we have seen in the comics really depends on the artist we are talking about

Tom Hardy really needs to buff up if there won't be cgi muscles.
And grif, I'll bet that you'll love this movie and will cry for your mom when they reboot Natman again.

I wonder if they are going to use JGL as the pre venom bane and Hardy for the rest of the film?

How big do you guys want him to get, if you think Hardy will be as big as Bane is in the comics, then you really need help. I think he will get big but no where near "massive."

I'm still trying to figure out what it is about Bane that Nolan is interested in. 90% of the characters attributes are rooted in things too cartoonish to put in the films based on Nolan's own criteria. Dude injects himself with something called Venom and becomes monsterously huge. This aspect and his look IS the entire character. If he's not monsteriosly big and high off venom juice, what's left of the character? What's the point of picking him if it's not really going to be him? Of course Hardy is not going to get as big as Bane, but Bane is so big, there's really no realistic live-action level of size unless the actor is literally a body builder. The actor has to at least meat the character half way, and with Bane, half way is impossible. But, I trust Nolan will make a quality film.
