THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Shares New Details On Paul Dano's Riddler: "He's Not Just A Serial Killer"

Fittingly, Paul Dano's take on The Riddler remains one of the most mysterious aspects of The Batman, but director Matt Reeves has now shed some more light on this incarnation of the classic villain.

While we obviously know the basic premise of The Batman, Matt Reeves' upcoming reboot is still shrouded in mystery to some degree, and, fittingly enough, Paul Dano's new interpretation of The Riddler is one of the more enigmatic aspects of the story.

We know Edward Nashton is a serial killer who seems to be targeting Gotham's elite, and the trailers have pretty much confirmed that he not only sets his crosshairs on Bruce Wayne, but that he's fully aware of the billionaire's penchant for donning a cape and cowl while stalking the streets as The Dark Knight.

During an interview with Total Film, Reeves shed a little more light on this latest take on the classic Batman villain, making it clear that he does have a larger agenda.

"He’s not just a serial killer. He definitely has a political agenda," said the filmmaker. "There’s a terrorist aspect to him. He’s indicting the city for what it is. And one of the things he’s doing with each of these crimes is, he’s attacking the so-called legitimate pillars of the city. The whole point of it was to put [Batman] on the path of trying to solve a mystery that was not only going to reveal the history of the city, and why it’s so corrupt, but that also is going to turn at a point, and become actually quite personal."

What this mystery at the heart of the corruption in Gotham City will turn out to be remains to be seen, but there are rumors that The Court of Owls might be revealed as the shadowy organization pulling the strings. Reeves went on to explain where the idea for The Riddler's distinctive costume originated from.

"I read Mindhunter. It made me think of the Zodiac killer, and how he actually wore this primitive costume that really is a primitive superhero costume... a rogues’ gallery costume. And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s really scary, the idea of people really wearing masks, and withholding their identities, and terrorizing people, and how scary that is.’ And so I started thinking, 'Well, it could be an origin tale for the Riddler, and it could be an origin tale for some of these other characters.'"

The Batman is set to hit theaters on March 4.

Im really looking forward to this movie.

But who the [frick] greenlit this Riddler design.
How come when the Lizard didnt wear a labcoat, every TASM article bashed it, but here its ok.

@OptimusCrime - This is a different approach to Riddler and I'm okay with it. They're not going for the cane-twirling, flamboyant version we all know lol.

@OptimusCrime

Lizard looked horrible in NWH. He opened his mouth in the prison cell and I legit burst out laughing.

Say what you want about the design, like it or not. I think it’s pretty damn unsettling and fits the tone of what we’ve seen in Reeves movie.

Not sure the Jim Carrey question mark onesie would work here.

It’s not a 1:1 where comic design is the end all/be all. This reminds me of TDK. People were pissed Joker wasn’t permawhite in the set photos and trailers.

Didn’t really matter at the end of the day.

@regularmovieguy - He doesn't need a onesie. But a dark green business suit with a question mark somewhere on it would have been nice. Maybe the question mark could have been like a lapel pin. And the business suit could have been a little ragged or beat up.

I would have far preferred something like that over this.

@OptimusCrime - at first I hated the Riddler design but I actually really dig it now. It’s a completely different take and that’s fine with me..

The Lizard design in both TASM and NWH, however, is straight up embarrassing.

@TheLobster - The Lizard design is pretty dead on to the original design. Even if it did look bad (which I don’t think it does)embarrassing is definitely overselling it.

@OptimusCrime - I feel like Suicide Squad was the breaking point of people really expecting comic accurate looks from a DC movie. Once that one dropped, a comic accurate costume became a nice bonus for people because the bigger task of making a good movie was now the central point of anxiety and uncertainty

Doesn't help that the consensus "best" DC movies of the past 20 years were Nolan's which kinda established this precedence Reeve's films are mostly benefitting from.

I will agree with the political message that the director has designed to be endemic to this film. Am I being sarcastic or not? Who can say?

Anyone else reading "and actually become quite personal" as Thomas Wayne was a baddie?

@MyBeard - oh yeah. If this movie delves into the Court of Owls, I can see him having been the leader of the Court

If Riddler isn't trying to out the Court of Owls (and Belle Real, who I think is either connected to them or to Carmine, or both), I don't know what his agenda could be.

What I do know for certain, Nygma is into some kinky shit.

It's crazy to think the Zodiac Killer was a real life Riddler... And he was GOOD at it.

@KWilly - Son of Sam was probably a group of Court of Owls / Talon style killers. Except, you know, pudgy and dumb.

@FleischerSupes - I like this idea of basing the rogues gallery off of real life serial killers, Charles Manson and his cult is definitely gonna be the basis for Joker.

@KWilly - As macabre as it sounds, the Zodiac Killer is the best basis you can have for a disturbing version of Riddler. As simplistic as his "costume" was, Zodiac's appearance alone struck fear all over the country. It's bizarre to me that people were legitimately expecting Riddler to be wearing a jumpsuit with bright, neon green and flaming red hair in this movie.
KWilly
KWilly - 2/1/2022, 10:12 AM
@JesseCuster - They said around that time in Vallejo, they scheduled a cop to be on every school bus because they weren't sure when/where the Zodiac would strike next.

Charles Manson should be the basis for Deacon Blackfire, not Joker.
