THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Updates On Sequel; Says He's "Deep" Into Working On The Script

Despite the recent DCU shakeup, a sequel to The Batman is still very much in development, and director Matt Reeves has now shared an update on how he's progressing with the script...

Some fans were a little concerned about the future of Matt Reeves "Batverse" when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as DC Studios co-heads, but the former confirmed that a sequel to The Batman was still very much in development when quizzed about it on social media.

Reeves hasn't shared any updates in a while, but the filmmaker was asked how the project is progressing during an interview with Collider. He refused to confirm or deny if he's planning to shoot this year, but he did reveal that he and co-writer are making a lot of progress on the script.

“We're deep in it and my partner and I are writing, Mattson [Tomlin] and I are writing, and it's really exciting, and I'm really excited about what we're doing.”

It's not really much of an update, but it's nice to hear that The Batman 2 is definitely moving forward from the director himself. THR recently suggested that there may be plans to "fold" the Batverse into the DCU and make Robert Pattinson the shared world's Dark Knight, but Gunn debunked the report, making it clear that he intends to introduce an all-new version of the hero at some point.

In the same interview, Reeves reaffirmed that the planned HBO Max Penguin series will directly tie into the sequel.

“There's actually a whole little fabric of things we're wanting to do, the way we're doing with The Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel.”

This would seem to indicate that Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) will be one of the main villains in the film, but Reeves will almost certainly introduce a new antagonist, too.
