We recently got confirmation that Matt Reeves' The Batman would make its streaming debut on HBO Max this coming Monday, April 18, and Warner Bros. Italy has now released the chilling first 10 minutes of the movie online in anticipation.

We begin with The Riddler (Paul Dano) watching Mayor Mitchell (Rupert Penry-Jones) from afar as he plays with his son before he goes out trick-or-treating on Halloween night. The deranged villain then breaks in and brutally beats his first victim to death, setting his plan to punish corrupt Gotham officials and bring the city to its knees in motion.

As opening sequences go, this is actually closer to the horror genre than something you'd usually expect to see in a major studio superhero film, and perfectly sets the tone for what's to come.

Have you been to see The Batman yet? If so, what did you think? You can check out our review here.

"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens."

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

The Batman is rated PG-13 for “strong violence, disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material.”

@2013venjix - guessing you think one of dc's non batman movies since dark knight was better?

@dracula - I’d watch Shazam! sooner than this.

@HorseWengh - I tell ya, both times I watched the Batman, I fell asleep. Twice. Per viewing. I like the movie but it has definite mutant sleeping factor. Shazam’s more entertaining by far

@TheWalkingCuban -
Eh, not every superhero movie has to be a light-hearted jokefest, especially when the MCU is already cranking out three movies a year. I understand not wanting characters like Superman and the Flash to be dark, but I don't get why people want DC to full-on copy Marvel in general.

The Batman set out to be more of a detective-driven crime film instead of a bombastic superhero movie (until the last twenty minutes when the Riddler's characterisation flipped, anyways) and it did so quite well.

@Darkknight2149 - I agree. I agree with everything you said. It’s still put me to sleep twice, both times I watched it, not once each time but twice each time. The dark Knight and joker did not do that, not even the dark Knight rises. Shang Chi and eternals put me to sleep. Here’s the thing, all three of those that put me to sleep had some boring parts. I’m not talking about a lull in the action or comedy or even drama, I’m talking about uninteresting action, comedy, or drama. Shang Chi does not need to be serious. Batman does not need to be lighthearted. It would be nice if they were both just entertaining throughout. They were entertaining, but not throughout. And yes I am entertained by drama. Entertaining drama.

@TheWalkingCuban - You fall asleep alot watching movies haha, maybe a condition? I watch plenty of films I end up not liking, but dont automatically fall asleep.

@ScRipt69 - I have the bad habit of not going to sleep until close to midnight because of so many long nights at work. So even on my short nights, I’m still going to sleep about that time. It’s not good. Many times because of work I’m still up til almost 4 AM. Driving.

Probably one of the most intriguing first minutes I've ever seen into a CMB. I really like the suspense and also the feeling of fear that the criminals express when the Bat-Signal appears.

In just 10 minutes, Reeves perfectly introduced the villain, the hero, and the world that they inhabit. The music and cinematography are also top notch. What a fantastic opening.

@MovieMonster - it's a very tight and well constructed film. I'm greedy and wish more attention of this caliber was paid throughout the film, some of the later developments felt lame to me, I still feel this film is very very well crafted.

I genuinely think this is the greatest comic book film ever made. It just captures the world of Batman so well and just gets better and better on each viewing. Just amazing stuff.

Not nearly as good as the Christopher Nolan films, but at least Warner Brothers has finally figured out after a decade that the pseudo-realistic character driven films are what people want. Not one of those films has lost money for them. They still have a problem constantly rebooting Batman for no reason and still not being able to coordinate a shared universe.

John75 - 4/12/2022, 9:22 PM
Nah, the so called realistic take just makes Batman look more stupid. There’s no sense of larger than life grandeur or mystery to any of this. Just another boring take on the character with a lead that brought no charisma to the role.
“GRRRR I’m Batman, I have all the depth and personality of a goth teenager.” WHAT A JOKE! Hell, not one person I’ve talked to actually liked the film. I get the feeling IF a they make a second one, it’ll be diminishing returns at the box office

As someone who has cooled on the Nolan films over the years, this was refreshing. No military industrial tech, no bright lights, just a mystery and lots of rain.
SwingsetKnight
SwingsetKnight - 4/12/2022, 9:33 PM
This will seem heretical, I know, but I preferred this one to the Nolan films. I acknowledge that TDK was technically a superior movie, but it felt more like a generic crime movie that happened to star some rich dude who dressed up. This one felt like an actual Batman movie, down to the moodiness of Gotham and the detective work.

Granted it leaned really hard into that Earth One edginess and went on for like twenty minutes too long, but overall I thought it was a good take.
Vision85
Vision85 - 4/13/2022, 1:14 AM
@SwingsetKnight - what do you feel is technically superior? Personally, i think the cinematography, editing and sound in TDK is vastly worse. I feel like the technical argument isnt even in the table, it comes down to story preference.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 4/13/2022, 7:26 AM
@Vision85 - the script. Sure this had "detective work" but bad detective work. He's almost completely incompetent the entire film outside of solving some not so great riddles. Even Gordon comes off as an idiot in the detective dept here. TDKs bat had agency, still failed, but made strides. Reeves needs a writer
