The Batman was released in theaters last March, grossing over $770 million at the worldwide box office. The movie may not have found the same $1 billion success as Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and its sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, but the R-Rating meant the majority of younger moviegoers were unable to watch Matt Reeves' reboot on the big screen.
Regardless, the blockbuster was still a hit and scored overwhelmingly positive reviews. Cameras are already rolling on an HBO Max TV series revolving around The Penguin, while The Batman II is moving forward at DC Studios, albeit as an "Elseworlds" project.
Very little has been revealed about the sequel, but with Alberto Falcone set to appear in The Penguin, many fans believe an adaptation of "The Long Halloween" could be on the horizon.
We'll have to wait and see, but insider Daniel Richtman is reporting that Paul Dano (The Riddler) and Colin Farrell (Oswald Cobblepot) have both signed up to reprise their respective roles. The latter was to be expected, though we are surprised Edward Nashton is coming back so soon.
The last time we saw him, the serial killer had been imprisoned in Arkham Asylum and found an unexpected new ally in Barry Keoghan's Joker prototype. While the Clown Prince of Crime could take centre stage in The Batman II, we'd argue that using that villain again might feel too similar to The Dark Knight.
Whatever the case may be, the sequel can't get here soon enough, and we're sure Reeves has some exciting plans. It would be fun to see a villain we haven't seen on the big screen before - or even someone like Mr. Freeze - but we'd bet on whoever it is being another grounded baddie. The Brave and the Bold can always take us down a more comic-accurate route, of course.
Right now, the only confirmed cast members are Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth).
The Batman II is currently set to be released in theaters on October 3, 2025.
