THE BATMAN II: Colin Farrell And Paul Dano Have Reportedly Signed Up To Return In Matt Reeves' Sequel

With production on The Batman II gearing up, a new report claims we can expect to see more of both The Penguin and The Riddler in Matt Reeves' highly anticipated sequel. Find more details after the jump!

The Batman was released in theaters last March, grossing over $770 million at the worldwide box office. The movie may not have found the same $1 billion success as Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and its sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, but the R-Rating meant the majority of younger moviegoers were unable to watch Matt Reeves' reboot on the big screen.

Regardless, the blockbuster was still a hit and scored overwhelmingly positive reviews. Cameras are already rolling on an HBO Max TV series revolving around The Penguin, while The Batman II is moving forward at DC Studios, albeit as an "Elseworlds" project.

Very little has been revealed about the sequel, but with Alberto Falcone set to appear in The Penguin, many fans believe an adaptation of "The Long Halloween" could be on the horizon.

We'll have to wait and see, but insider Daniel Richtman is reporting that Paul Dano (The Riddler) and Colin Farrell (Oswald Cobblepot) have both signed up to reprise their respective roles. The latter was to be expected, though we are surprised Edward Nashton is coming back so soon.

The last time we saw him, the serial killer had been imprisoned in Arkham Asylum and found an unexpected new ally in Barry Keoghan's Joker prototype. While the Clown Prince of Crime could take centre stage in The Batman II, we'd argue that using that villain again might feel too similar to The Dark Knight

Whatever the case may be, the sequel can't get here soon enough, and we're sure Reeves has some exciting plans. It would be fun to see a villain we haven't seen on the big screen before - or even someone like Mr. Freeze - but we'd bet on whoever it is being another grounded baddie. The Brave and the Bold can always take us down a more comic-accurate route, of course.

Right now, the only confirmed cast members are Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth).

The Batman II is currently set to be released in theaters on October 3, 2025.

Hush and his possible relationship with the Riddler, please.

@Repian - Batman might suspect that Tommy Elliot is Hush, but Basil Karlo provides Elliot with an alibi. Elliot lets himself be seen as Hush attacks.

Basil Karlo may be a patient of Tommy Elliot. Basil is an old Hollywood star obsessed with his physical appearance. A plastic surgery addict who continually subjects his face to change. Someone vulnerable to Elliot's manipulation.

@Repian - That's never happening in a Reeves movie. Clayface will be a serial killer who wears a clay mask.

I’d imagine Riddler will only show up in a small capacity in Arkham.

Hope Dano’s role is minimal, cause that take was embarrassing the minute the mask came off.

It was definitely PG-13 in America. Can't speak for anywhere else, but The Batman was not rated R where I live lol.

I watched Gotham recently (all 5 seasons) and I couldn't believe how much of it was a direct inspiration to both Joker and The Batman. Now it seems that The Penguin will basically be a combination of the Sofia Falcone season (which was very different from the Dark Victory comics) and the final Zero Year/No Man's Land season.

And now the sequel is basically just the same villains from both the first film and it's spin-off series.

Best we can hope for is a realistic take on Mr. Freeze or Clayface and I'm not sure I wanna really see that.

I highly doubt Todd Phillips or Matt Reeves have watched Gotham.

@regularmovieguy - Last week I woulda said the same thing.

In fact I would hae said "I highly doubt Matt Reeves has watched Gotham and I highly doubt Todd Phillips has ever read a comic book ever", but near enough.

But now I'm thinking that may be one of the only things they have watched. Whole plotlines. Joker killing his mother, inspiring a city of Joker followers to riot on live television. Sophia Falcone taking back Gotham in the name of her father (and not being in a wheelchair), a show about the GCPD charting the Penguin's rise to power, with Penguin as the main character, the whole season that blends No Man's Land and Zero Year, etc. etc. etc.

I saw so many things that I recognised from both Joker and The Batman. It's all right there.
Right down to the Ava Maria in Arkham Asylum. Everything.

The only thing I highly doubt now is whether you have watched all of Gotham in the last half year or so. Because it's really obvious when you watch it.

I [frick]ing love the design, cinematography and atmosphere of this film.

And I [frick]ing hate it as a movie and its Batman. Such a letdown. Robert Pattison was [frick]ing terrible, he reverted back to his Twilight acting. Came across as a bratty moody annoying teenager trying to be brooding and dark.
Dano was… unmemorable. Expected so much from a Riddler played by Dano with serial killer vibes. That should have been such a kickass plot and performance. I barely remember him.

Farrel is one of my favourite actors…. But I don’t get all the raving about his Penguin. It was a gimmick performance hyped up because of the makeup, when anyone could have played it because it was just a caricature of mob guys like Tony Soprano, and there are a million actors wirh that look who do that schtick.

Only thing I thought was really cool beyond the design, cinematography and soundtrack was Kravitz Catwoman. Pretty cool. Batmobile was [frick]ing awesome too.

Anyway I’m ranting but this one disappointed me. Not really in for a sequel because Pattison will still be driving it. Much as I wnjoy a lot of his recent work.

@connorblaze - I'm glad that I wasn't the only one that was disappointed in The Batman. The "detective mystery" was really badly written and became so convoluted towards the end before it pivoted focus to "action blockbuster" mode for the finale.

I've honestly seen better detective writing on Law & Order SVU.

New GOAT trilogy incoming. Can’t wait to see more of the absolute greatest written and performed Batman of all time.

The film was rated PG 13 and even if it were an R rating, that did not stop Joker from obtaining a billion dollars on a smaller budget.

If "Part II" is going to be inspired by The Long Halloween, I can imagine an escape plan from Arkham may be part of the plot. That's where the Riddler and Joker can engage in the final act.

Hmmm....This is good. Seems like they may continue the whole "Hannibal Questioning" theme they cut out last film.
