BOX OFFICE: TDKR Crosses $300M Domestic Mark, Joining THE AVENGERS And HUNGER GAMES

With $8.8M on Tuesday, The Dark Knight Rises joins an elite 2012 movie club as 1 of 3 films to cross the $300M domestic mark. The film still lags behind its predecessor The Dark Knight in comparison.

The Avengers ended its domestic run with $616M while The Hunger Games finished with $406M at the US box office. The Dark Knight Rises currently sits at $304M domestic, after 12 days of resale. The film should achieve a $600M worldwide gross prior to the weekend. After 12 days, The Dark Knight had a domestic box office of $333,929,159 while Marvel's The Avengers accumulated $389,473,290, respectively. Of course, there is no certifiable methodology to determine exactly what impact the Aurora, Colorado shooting is having on The Dark Knight Rises' box office performance.

Didnt Avengers make like 600 mil in US and the rest overseas? Are people in the US getting sick of movies or something, because alot of movies this year have been getting 60 to 70% of their box office gross overseas.

if the movie does not perform as well domestically but does well everywhere else it DOES mean that the shooting had an effect and that, without it, the film's box office numbers might be higher by now. And to those who say it didn't have an impact look at the kind of negative media coverage it received. people were told to be scared and some even blamed TDK for what happened so it's possible that SOME people at least stayed away because of the fearmongering machine that is American news media.

FAtypeofguy@ and your rant and calling grif names makes you any better? At least grif has never personally attacked someone on this site. He just says what he thinks about a movie. Like his opinion or not, that's the purpose of the forums.

Whatever the motives of the shooter were, the one thing that did end up happening was a huge public awareness campaign that the film was playing. Talk of the film and shooting dominated ever major news network for quite some time and it was the water cooler talk at work, etc. For those who did not know about the film or didn't care, the tragedy changed that. To say it had a negative impact on ticket sales is still speculation.There were people who chose not to go to to the show right after the shooting...there are people are going to see the film now because of what happened. I don't think the shooting will have a negative impact on the numbers in the long run. If anything more people may see it over time due to all the talk in the news.

I'm concerned with this attention to the gross receipts. It really doesn't matter anyway. We all knew it was going to make a huge profit. Either it is more or less than "The Dark Knight" or "The Avengers" it becomes irrelevant. It was a great ride.

Can't say I blame people in the US for being scared to go see TDKR after what happened...

@FatherMidnight Actually, I've read a few comments that had the nerve to say that the Aurora incident boosted awareness and sales. Quite ridiculous.

I'm fine with that. Just because it is the last film, doesn't mean is has to be better than it predecessor. Same goes with Lotr and Star Wars.

95@ Mine would be one of them and why pray tell would that be ridiculous? Do you have a degree in marketing and public relations? Do you understand the awareness of the film that was created because of shooting? I'm not saying that is a good thing, but to say the shooting didn't create awareness for people who didn't know about the film is quite ridiculous. There was more press and media for the film created via the news of the event than any commercials could have ever hoped to accomplish.

@blueberry

Looking at the international box office, TDKR is doing 46% of it's total grosses overseas.

For comparison, The Avengers did 59% of it's total grosses overseas as well, so TDKR's overseas numbers are still catching up.

Out of the 32 countries including the US, TDKR has outperformed Avengers on OW on just 15 of them aka 47%, while Avengers had outperformed TDKR in 17 of them 53%.

@ELgUaSoN: So the dude who grabbed my bolls when I entered the TDKR screening room and his colleagues who even checked my girlfriend's purse as if we were at the airport entering an intercontinental flight and who did so only in front of TDKR's screening rooms weren't actual security staff from my local cinema, but just some perverts. Thanks for clearing that up - Now I have to take a shower.

Saw it last night. It was ok. I was disappointed in it though with me comparing it with the comics. I was surprised by Tom Hardy as Bane. Thought him and John Blake were the best two characters. Batman was starting to get smarter even if they didn't explain how. Thought it was anti-climatic to have Bane go out the way he did. It was a decent movie but was too light on Batman for a Batman central movie.
