Our friends over at Batman-News have found themselves a very interesting scoop that not only reveals who the villain will be in The Dark Knight Rises, but also what role the recently cast Tom Hardy will have. Here's what they had to say:

"I’ve heard that Tom Hardy is in fact going to play the villain. My source strongly believes that Hardy is going to be playing Hugo Strange. This is the first bit of information from this person that I’m publishing, however they have been accurate in the past."

"For example, this person told me weeks before the recent Christoper Nolan interview that The Riddler would not be appearing in the film. They also mentioned that Rachel Weisz and Anne Hathaway were in the running for the lead female role a couple of weeks before Deadline posted their list."

In case you didnt know, Professor Hugo Strange is a genius in many scientific fields and a master criminal strategist. Obsessed with Batman and his mind, he often dresses as him to prove himself better. He is also a good hand to hand combatant. Sounds like a good fit for Tom Hardy eh?

What do you think about Hardy playing Hugo Strange? If the sites source really is as reliable as they claim, it looks like we now know who the actor will play in the upcoming movie! Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

The Dark Knight Rises is set to be released on July 20, 2012!

it could work, but i would like a villain who could challenge batman not only psychologically but physically as well aka BANE but Hugo strange would definitely be a interesting villain

I thought Strange would make an interesting villain for a long time he is much more in The Dark Knight realm then Riddler or Bane I will be impressed with Nolan for choosing him if it is true.

You know... at this point, i really couldn't care less about any news of this film. Why? Cause everything that gets announced about this film will never sound as good as the very film itself. Nolan has that habit. Everything we heard of it is so "meh" yet Nolan will end up blowing all our pants off. So... whatever, i'll definitely see it. BRING IT ON!

@Josh - you want to be careful posting articles like this. Despite you clearly stating it as a rumour and even giving the title in the form of a question, I'm sure one or two sites will see this as another "unreliable CBM article" :-p.

if true, that would be awesome. In the comics Hugo Strange is in fact a psychological and physical threat. The guy is totally insane! He has a sick fascination for Batman, to the point that he wants to become Batman (with all the physical requirements that implies), and he experiments with people creating "monster men". He also gets to be a consultor for a police task force that has to take down batman.

i just hope he can get the smart guy vibe right. And Lipton is a great man but dont think he's age will allow for the rolein this movie.

I like the sound of this a lot more. I wasn't too fond of the idea of Black Mask as the main threat, Hugo Strange is a nice mix of mental and physical danger.

Didn't Hugo Strange work in Arkaham? I couldn't see them doing this without some type of Joker voice cameo. (just the laugh).
I hope its not Strange though. I never really liked him

How many more times can it be reiterated, Dent is Dead. Time to move on. Personally, Two face has been done and I'd prefer to have a new villain rather than an old one brought back to life.

This makes plenty of sense. A realistic fella that Nolan can use, and he would fall into the story line as it is left very well. I wouldn't worry about the character as you know him in the comics. Nolan knows how to make him interesting and make him carry the movie if he needs to. Here is a snippet from Strange's Wiki Bio that would work seamlessly into the ongoing story.

"Partly due to Hugo Strange's appearance on TV as a psychological expert, Captain Gordon is ordered to put together a Task Force to capture Batman, with Strange working as a consultant to try to discover Batman's identity. As the investigation continues, however, Strange grows increasingly monomaniacal in his obsession with Batman. His greatest desire is to become Batman. To that end, he has attempts to kill the Caped Crusader, and then take his place. Strange eventually concludes that Bruce Wayne is most likely Batman, brainwashes the head of the police Task Force into becoming a lethal vigilante to turn public sentiment against Batman, and kidnaps the mayor's daughter. He is ultimately caught, shot twice and dumped into a river; it was then assumed he had died."

When we left off in TDK, Batman is a fugitive, so this would work perfectly.

Actually sounds dead on Nolan to me. I call credible

Plus there's this:

Following that, Strange reappears as the head of a gang of super-criminals attempting to take control of Gotham's East Side, then controlled by Catwoman. Catwoman joins Strange's gang, then allows its members to "find out" that she intends to betray them, faking her death when they attempt to eliminate her. Although she defeats and imprisons most of the gang, and even convinces Strange to leave the East Side alone, Strange still mocks her by pointing out that he had faked his own death far more often than she had.

If Catwoman is involved in this movie, he does have some story history with her too that they can work with for the script.

I've been saying this all along.
There are two possible ideas for the script that I have narrowed it down to. One of them is Hugo Strange, which I am now more convinced of than the other. It would also make sense with HarleyQuinn (which I am certain will be the female villian), as they were both doctor's at Arkham, in the comics. The Dark Knight Rises/ Dark Moon Rising -see?

@ Dfresh - yer doode love it, spesh since they were hintin about copycats in TDK, and that lethal vigilante could be black mask. totally gotta rageing semi for this movie

Also doubt Hugo Strange is going to be the MAIN MAIN villain; but it can be a strong supporting part for Hardy.

It seems appropriate to me to have the Riddler as the main villain. Batman Begins was about defining Batman/Wayne as a character in terms of what could motivate a person to be such thing, TDK dealt with the theme of anarchy, and it left the audience wonder a bit if there is any point in character of Batman in the established world of criminal chaos. What I would do to sum up the whole Nolan's story of Batman is to prove there is a point. The Riddler would make sense as the symbolic embodiment of Batman's inner struggle to find a purpose for his aspirations towards making the world a better place, in conventional terms of speaking, or making it morally more pure. The Riddler would make Batman bring to his senses why he himself (Batman) believes he should continue doing what he once started. The Riddler, who's there to prove him it's pointless, what he's trying to do, would give him a riddle of his being and Batman would solve it. Once and forever.

Acually, what Dfrash said about Strange creating copycats falls in perfectly with the other idea from the script, that my source told me about. She said it was about the themes of vigilantes and Anarky was going to be the main villian, with another copycat, also.
The story that I belive Dfresh was referring to was Prey, an arc in Legends of the Dark Knight. There is also a story called Blades in LOTDK, by James Robinson and Tim Sale, which features the best rendition of The Cavalier. I think he would be a perfect choice for the other vigilante, if they followed this story-arc. However, I think Nolan will go for Hush instead of The Cavalier.

I still hope Black Mask is in it at some point, and not the screaming maniac from the Under the Red Hood movie. that was just stupid.
