The Batman is expected to take place in the second year of the Dark Knight's career, and that means it is, in some ways, another origin story for the iconic DC Comics character. As a result, instead of befriending District Attorney Harvey Dent, the Caped Crusader will presumably run afoul of Gotham City D.A., Gil Colson (a new creation with no comic book history).
During a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, actor Peter Sarsgaard confirmed that's the name of his character in The Batman, and shed some light on his personality and motivations.
"Gil Colson, yeah yeah, and I’m a district attorney, and I’m basically a politician that has trouble telling the truth," the actor explained.
"I’m a pretty distasteful person in it," he continued before adding,
"Daddy doesn’t play nice people," when asked if his kids would prefer watching his character or wife Maggie Gyllenhaals Rachel Dawes in
The Dark Knight.
It honestly wouldn't be that surprising to learn that Colson is in cahoots with someone like Carmine Falcone, with a scene late in the movie possibly teasing Harvey Dent as his replacement. With any luck, writer and director Matt Reeves has something a little less predictable than that in mind, though.
