Tim Burton Wanted 'Chucky' Voice Actor Brad Dourif For Joker In BATMAN

During a panel for the 25th anniversary of horror film "Chucky" at New York Comic Con, the voice actor of the famed doll Brad Dourif revealed Tim Burton once asked him to play the Joker in his 1989 Batman movie.

It appears that director Tim Burton originally considered another actor for the part of The Joker in his 1989 Batman movie. During a panel for the 25th anniversary of horror film "Chucky" at New York Comic Con, the voice of the iconic doll 'Brad Dourif' was Burton's original choice for the Joker. The actor who did get the part, Jack Nicholson, was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film. "Tim Burton saw me on a plane and wanted to cast me and they [the studio] said no," said Dourif during the panel. When another cast member on stage mentioned it was Nicholson who ended up with the part, Dourif joked, "He takes all my roles." That wasn't the only time Dourif was pegged to play a member of Batman's Rogue's Gallery. When Burton was originally attached to 1995's "Batman Forever," Dourif was considered to play the Scarecrow. Would you have preferred Dourif over Nicholson? Sound off below.

Wow, THAT'S Dourif?! I really never knew this guy's name.... I would not have mind at all but I think he would've made an even greater Scarecrow.

@SuperCat I lol'd hard at that comment.

He appeared in few episodes of Star Trek as the creepy pyscopathic Betazoid

I could see him playing Cletus Cassidy / Carnage in a Spider-Man film if Sony ever went that route which they probably won't.

Nicholson was amazing as The Joker, but - DANG - I would have loved to see Dourif in the part too.

Yes he's always been one of my top fan choices for the Joker....he's got the creepiness, he's got the acting chops (one flew over the cuckoo's nest), can't deny he's got the (chucky) laugh, and he's got the look hands down!

Nicholson's Joker may be campy as hell, but it worked very well with the tone of the movie. Still, it would have been interesting seeing Dourif's take. That dude can play crazy like nobody's business.

brad dourif would have made it his own.

love nicholson in anything else though.

brad dourif made such an impression in one flew over the cuckoos nest that i think it may have damaged his career.

Jack is my favorite Joker also who would have been even greater in the role if he was younger. Dourif would have nailed it too. I think he would have made more psychotic Joker. Nicholson played the role in classy way.

Check out Tobe Hoopers Spontanious Combustion. Dourif is great in it.

It just came down to name recognition and, while I loved Nicholson in the roll, I think Dourif would have been incredible as the Joker. Now-a-days, he'd probably do a great job if they were to do a live action Dark Knight Returns but I don't see that happening anyway.

Mostly younger ppl don't care for Jack's Joker or Batman '89. Guess you had to be there when there was nothing but the TV iterations to compare him to.

Batman '89 is a great movie! And is the superior Batman movie of the Burton-age.

Would have been cool to see Dourif's performance but I'm happy with Nicholson.

I wanted Brad Dourif to play the Joker in TDK. I think he would have given Jack and Heath a run for their money. He's a good actor, he can play creepy characters, has the laugh, and most importantly the look.

Funny how everyone, including me, likes to rename the film "Child's Play", to "Chucky" instead.

Dourif could have any creepy, bad guy role and just crawl like a baby to home base.

I really liked Jack, but I would be interested to see Brad's take on the character. Would've made the man a true star. Certainly deserves it. His name is on everything.

TheRedSkull - 10/14/2013, 6:21 PM
He would've made a skinnier, much more creepier Joker. Could've been phenomenal for all we know.

I say just cast Troy Baker...for both Voice and Live Action!

I've always loved Brad Dourif. He was just born creepy. I watch anything that he's in...no matter how bad,..just to see him. He's that [frick]ing good. I never considered this before but he totally should have been the Joker. I could see him owning that role. He's still [frick]ing awesome but that could've defined his career.
