Warner Bros. Executive Calls THE DARK KNIGHT RISES "Groundbreaking"

And in other news, Deadline spoke with a Warner Bros. executive who explains why they decided to feature the new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises with Marvel's The Avengers.

The Wrap spoke with Jeff Goldstein, executive vice president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. and he briefly raves about the film.
“This is what a summer popcorn movie is all about. I don’t want to oversell it, but this has elements that are ground-breaking and are really a thrill ride.”

Deadline spoke with an unnamed Warner Bros. executive about the decision to include the third trailer for The Dark Knight Rises with The Avengers.
"Yes, our 3rd trailer will be out with The Avengers. We see this placement as a good strategic decision. We always want our trailers to be seen with films that people want to see — and a lot of people will be going to The Avengers! It will provide the best potential exposure for The Dark Knight Rises. It’s a big positive for everyone!"

The Marvel vs. DC rivalry would at first make you think this shouldn't be, but the track record says otherwise. Nolan in 2008 had his latest trailer for The Dark Knight put in front of Marvel's Iron Man, and in 2010 he placed a trailer for Inception in front of Iron Man 2.

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th 2012 and stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

The Marvel vs. DC rivalry doesnt matter to the marketing departments of either film or the heneral public. They'll do whatever is necessary to get exposure and the Avengers is all the rage right now. It would have been a flat out bad business decision by WB to not have the trailer with Avengers

Yeah in the long run, there is no Marvel and DC, when it comes to the films side of the business, as they are both out to make the best product to make the most money, for instance if tomorrow it came out both films would benefit and make 50% extra if they both had commercials, 1. Bruce watching the Avengers and 2. The avengers movie they were watching TDKR they would do it, not 1 marketing exec would say "Well one is Marvel and one is DC"

The Avengers is completely hogging the summer movie buzz, it's come out on top on a few "most anticipated" lists and the tracking is off the charts... this is damage control.

They knew Avengers would be big, but I think even they underestimated just how big, and now it's scaring them a little bit. Solution? "Leak" a bunch of WB people saying it's the greatest movie ever, then put the trailer in front of The Avengers just to remind everyone "Hey, this is supposed to be our summer too, and just in case you forgot, take this home with ya."

Either way, the fans win. Just one more reason to be at the theater May 3rd at midnight (as if I needed another one).

I wasn't going to watch The Avengers on opening day but it looks like I should now thanks to the new TDKR trailer. I hope we see more of Marion this time.

@beetheb You seem to be forgetting that this isn't ye first Nolan film to get its trailer in front if a Marvel movie. This had nothing to do with WB execs worrying about the Avengers, Avengers can make loads of cash (I hope it does), but to think people will watch the Avengers and nothing else is silly. Plus I remember early feb when Avengers news was no where to be found then ye campaign kicked into high gear this is merely doing the samething. I can say the TDKR will do fine at the box office, with or without the Avengers.

Im still very excited for the dark knight rises.

But i mean, really, what else is an executive going to say about a movie that he is trying to sell.

Now THIS I'm more inclined to believe than that other report from that random person. Since this guy is an executive at the studio, it seems more likely he could have seen the film early. I know I know, a studio executive won't say anything bad about it, but this is still very pleasing to hear. I hope all three CBMs this summer kick ass!

*chuckles* @ people thinking the last movie of a trilogy of the highest grossing Superhero franchise ever in the history of cinema needs DAMAGE CONTROL.

lmao

these Warner Bros Exec. aren't even sweating The Avengers. Nobody should be. it's all around great for the movie business.

The Avengers comes out and that will die down (respectfully) then two months later TDKR will take over the summer.

very simple

You people should understand that studios are out for one thing, our greenbacks. As you sit there and fight your silly imaginary DC/MARVEL war. The studios sit back to bleed us of our cash like thirsty vampires. Its goning to be a great summer for them.
