BLACK CANARY In The Works At HBO Max With BoP's Jurnee Smollett & LOVECRAFT COUNTRY Scribe Misha Green

Following some Black Canary buzz earlier this week, a more reliable source has seemingly confirmed that a Black Canary movie is indeed in the works at HBO Max with its star and writer already in place.

After first getting word that a Black Canary movie was potentially in development at Warner Bros. earlier this week, Cinelinx has seemingly confirmed the existence of the project, revealing that HBO Max has tapped Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green to write the screenplay for a live-action spinoff.

Primetime Emmy-nominee Jurnee Smollett will reprise her role as Dinah Lance from Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which, despite its box office shortcomings, earned positive marks for Smollett's endearing performance.

Green's hiring will reunite the writer with her former Lovecraft Country star. The duo previously expressed interest in working together on a Black Canary spinoff last year, and it seems like they've turned their wishful thinking into a reality.

While there's still a small chance Black Canary could become a miniseries as development progresses, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that it is currently being developed as a movie, exclusively for HBO Max, joining the previously announced straight-to-streaming DC film titles Batgirl and Blue Beetle, which have up-and-comers Leslie Grace (In The Heights) and Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) set to star.

As for when we can expect an official announcement, this October's DC FanDome event seems like the safest bet, and depending on the status of the script, we could be getting a director reveal around that time, if not sooner. Also, considering Green is already set to write and direct Alicia Vikander's upcoming Tomb Raider sequel for WB and MGM, it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility that she ends up pulling double duty on Black Canary as well.

@TheLobster - What do you mean bring her back? She was never there.

Jurne Smollett! Hurreeey!

Misha Green... f. Cut the hype right in the middle.

Can we please get a movie about Black Canary, the hero, and not Black Canary, the ethnic minority oppresed by the patriachy? Please?

@JayBarrick - Id say the actress is good enough that they can salvage her by course correcting her characterization

@dracula - Agree. Though I would have liked Katheryn Winnick for the role, I have to admit that Jurne Smollett is a solid actress and could pull a good characters. But that won't be enough if the script fails the character itself.

Winnick could be her mother. BOP established that Dinah's mom was a crimefighter with same powers.

No thanks. I kept forgetting she was supposed to be Black Canary the whole time I was watching Birds of Prey. Same can be said for Cassandra Cain and (to a lesser extent) Zsasz and Black Mask.

@Darkknight2149 - Id put her above the rest of the characters

Harley : boiled down to her most superficial and annoying traits.

Huntress : a one note joke, but with an actor who would be perfect with a better script.

Cassandra Cain : only the character in name.

At least Canary felt like a real character with some kind of arc

@dracula -
My issue is that, aside from being forgettable, she just wasn't Black Canary. The character could have been called basically anything else.

@dracula - I had the exact same problem with Black Canary and Cassandra Cain. They were both character in essentially name only. You change her name to Kate Spencer or Evelyn Crawford (and got rid of her one cry) and would anyone have even noticed?

@dracula - I think they should have flipped the casting..

MEW: Black Canary
JSB: Huntress (Like from the Grayson comics
HQ: Well would have been nice if she acted like HQ.
CC: That...that wasn't CC in the slightest.

Awfully boring film.

@dracula - I'd rather see the Huntress with better writing, but your breakdown seems accurate.

@Darkknight2149 - Couldnt we say that about Iron Man, Green Lantern, virtually all the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, and Flash? I mean none of these characters really resemble their role in the comic? I felt Canary while not perfect was closer than some of the names I listed.

@GarthRanzz -
Not really? Robert Downey Jr. is pretty damn recognisable as the Iron Man: Extremis (Warren Ellis) Tony Stark, Green Lantern flopped for a reason, Thor is recognisable as Ultimate Thor, Ezra Miller tried to act like Wally West and didn't do a good job, and with some of the Guardians of the Galaxy, that actually is a problem.

That being said, Black Canary is more well known and has more exposure than the Guardians of the Galaxy, who weren't even a consistent team in the comics until 2012. Hell, Starlord wasn't even a consistent character. His personality completely flipped depending on the writer, so the film was no different on that front.

@Darkknight2149 - I thought they made Iron Man and Green Lantern way too jokey compared to the source material. Thor doesnt even talk like he does on the comics and they made him a clutz. Totally agree with you on Flash.

"Thor doesnt even talk like he does on the comics and they made him a clutz."

It depends on what version we're talking about. In the Ultimate Universe, Thor doesn't use Norse Speak and his personality is a bit closer to the MCU version compared to 616 Thor (same with Loki).

MCU Iron Man was heavily inspired by Warren Ellis's version of Tony Stark, with some Robert Downey Jr.'s own personality thrown in. I agree that they made him jokey, but that is more of a general MCU problem. Kevin Feige thinks every male MCU hero needs to be an aspiring comedian for some reason. If the formula works, I guess.

Green Lantern, I agree with you on. Warner Brothers wasn't trying to make a Green Lantern movie, they were trying to make a "superhero movie." They threw in elements from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Dark Knight, and basically every comic book movie cliche and the film suffered for it.

@Darkknight2149 - At the time of Iron Man, I thought they made him jokey since they didn't have Spider-Man rights and this set the template for everything MCU.

As for Thor's accent. They did the same with Black Widow. Screw the accent seems to be their mantra. I don't like Whedon that much but at least he had Scarlet Witch have an accent. Once he left MCU, he seemed to take the accent with him. Hopefully when all these actors leave and they eventually reboot the universe we get something more truer to what I grew up with.

WB/DC have no idea what they’re doing. They abandon projects after a little misstep. This is what happens when you don’t plan ahead

Not a great look that the 3 HBO Max movies are the ones starring women and minorities, but good for her. Heard she was great in Lovecraft Country so hopefully this takes off for her since that's not continuing
