On the heels of yesterday's exciting final trailer, Entertainment Weekly has revealed its Black Widow-inspired cover featuring star Scarlett Johansson.

BLACK WIDOW: Scarlett Johansson Confronts Her Past In The Action-Packed Final Trailer

The Jojo Rabbit Oscar-nominee doesn't appear in-character as Natasha Romanoff, but the mag does feature a brand new still from the movie as well as some new details and quotes from Johansson and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who offers an explanation as to why fans have been waiting so long for a solo Black Widow movie.

“We had been planning the conclusion for the Infinity Saga for the past five or six years, and Natasha’s journey within those films took the priority,” Feige tells the mag. “The notion of breaking out for a stand-alone film that takes place in the past, for a character that we already knew and were already following, didn’t feel right.”

Check out the image below along with some shots from Johansson's EW photoshoot and a cool new promo pic featuring Taskmaster.

The Family

A new shot of Natasha alongside her "sister" (Florence Pugh) and "mother" (Rachel Weisz).

Although they're not blood-related, there does seem to be a strong family dynamic at the heart of the movie. “I thought it would be a straightforward action movie," says David Harbour, who plays the "father" in this equation. "And then it wound up being a real character study of a dysfunctional family.”

Scarlett Johansson #1

Although fans have been asking for a standalone Black Widow adventure for many years, Johansson reveals that she actually wasn't all that interested - until she met director Cate Shortland, who was intrigued by the character's resilience.

“We just bonded over stories about trust and about intimacy and about women surviving,” Shortland says of her initial chat with the actress. “You didn’t have to be a superhero to identify with a woman who has had a really tough childhood and has survived and has a huge heart and helps other people.”

Scarlett Johansson #2

Black Widow does take place before the events of Avengers: Endgame (obvioulsy), but it sounds like it's going to have more to offer than the usual blockbuster prequel.

“A prequel that simply filled in the blanks of things you already know is not very exciting,” says Feige. “How does she get her Widow stingers for the first time? How did she learn to do a flip? That doesn’t matter.”

Cover

Johansson poses for EW's cover, not in character as Black Widow, but certainly taking some inspiration from the Lethal Avenger's moniker.

Taskmaster

Finally, we have an awesome new promo shot of the mysterious Taskmaster keeping his target in his sights.

We still don't know who'll be playing the villain (though one cast member may have spilled the beans), but we do know that he's going to be a very formidable foe.

"In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz is Melina. Directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige, “Black Widow”—the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—hits U.S. theaters on May 1, 2020." --Marvel Studios."

Black Widow also stars William Hurt, Ray Winstone and Olivier Richters. The movie hits theaters on May 1st. Let us know if you're looking forward to the movie in the comments.

It's amazing to think how far back they were planning the culmination of the Infinity Saga.

I actually like Taskmaster's helmet. It's a nice change that looks different but adds its own unique element that fits the character's theme even more than a skull.

It's actually the rest of the costume that underwhelmed me. But it looks like he's gonna be pretty cool to watch in action, so I'm excited for that.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the complaints of Widows death in Endgame? Like honestly, if it was anybody else (Thor, Hulk or Hawkeye), I'm pretty sure people would have been 10x more outraged. Especially with those three out of the original six...

I thought they made the absolute best choices that they could have. And she didn't feel like a predictable/generic choice to die either.

@Kurne - You realise they didn't NEED to off someone like that?
Kurne
Kurne - 3/10/2020, 10:42 AM
@Nebula - well according to those same people I was referring to, characters had to die in Endgame or else "no stakes" as per usual.

They were already going on about the fact that the dusted IW characters were coming back, so they had to be fed something I guess.
Nebula

@Kurne - Could've been handled in an infinite amount of different ways and doesn't have to be part of the original six.
Kurne
Kurne - 3/10/2020, 10:54 AM
@Nebula - it didn't. But that's what the writers wanted to do for Endgame (and its a set-up that I liked actually, with doing whatever it takes to bring back the dusted characters), and I thought it was handled well considering.

I of course would prefer she was around still. But again, people have complained about plot armor in the MCU movies over the years that it baffles me to no end that when it's finally peeled off, people are complaining about the opposite.

I was going to say that I'm jealous of people who will get to experience the MCU all at once the way I did the original Star Wars movies, but that's not how it works, is it?

When I watched Star Wars, it was ten years or so after they had come out. The franchise had "settled". But there's probably not a 10-year-old kid alive who hasn't seen some Marvel movie (or even pieces of one on TV). I wonder if that entire generation of kids will ever get a "fresh start" and watch from the beginning, or if it will just be background noise to their childhood (the way the Batman movies were for mine).

...Shit, all of these kids are going to grow up to be edgy teenage hipster douchebags about the MCU, aren't they?

@Spock0Clock - In my experience... most people go through a edgy douchebag phase at some point in their development/maturity... so it’ll just be more of the same.
Though... I’m not sure what a hipster is anymore... seems like everyone has a different definition...
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 3/10/2020, 11:57 AM
@CapnMurphy2021 - Yeah, hipster used to mean a certain thing, but then what that was became mainstream so then it sort of became hipster to be anti-hipster or something. And when the internet offers the potential for every POV-group to be as vocal as another, it's hard to gauge what the "mainstream" thing is a lot of the time.

@Spock0Clock - yeah... I mostly don’t care... but get confused by language that used to mean one thing and now means another.. or things like “incel” which I had no idea about until recently.
Maybe I just wish people could be more clear in issuing insults/compliments... or at least specify which is which.
It’s me in my lil pic here and recently someone called me a hippie.? I’m in my 40’s and have a high and tight fade with a handlebar mustache... how is that hippie? Do people even know what they’re saying anymore? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤸‍♂️🎊

That's got to be embarrassing for you're crying over rumors on a site that peddles rumors and a child has to correct you.
