DC Comics-based movies have never been as popular with critics as Marvel Studios' output, but Warner Bros. has had a particularly rough time of things of late, which is why the studio must be very pleased with Blue Beetle's reception.
The review embargo lifted yesterday afternoon, and with 88 verdicts counted, Jaime Reyes' big-screen debut has now been officially "certified fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, becoming the first DC theatrical release to be awarded the accolade since The Batman.
Despite Blue Beetle's current status on the review aggregator, its score has slipped a little even since this morning, and it now sits at 81%. Should it drop below 75% it will no longer be deemed certified fresh (this happened to Wonder Woman 1984), but that seems unlikely given how many reviews have already been added.
Of course, good reviews are no guarantee of success at the box office, and while the movie is tracking towards a decent opening weekend, nothing is certain when it comes to a relatively obscure character. After all, The Flash is one of the more recognizable DC heroes, and we don't need to remind you how his recent movie fared.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."
"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."
The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.
Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
