A handful of social media reactions for Blue Beetle have found their way online and so far, so good for the latest DC Extended Universe movie.
The prevailing opinion appears to be that this is a much-needed return to form for the franchise after a rocky couple of years which has seen movies like Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash bomb at the box office. We're also pleased to report that, in terms of Latino representation on screen, Blue Beetle is a win.
How seriously should you take these reactions? For starters, it's worth noting that the majority of these are from fanboys (we've excluded verdicts from those who accompanied their Tweets with photos of them being treated to an evening out in London with director Angel Manuel Soto).
We're not saying the studio that enlisted James Gunn, Tom Cruise, and Jaden Smith to hype The Flash as the "greatest" superhero movie ever made would try to create false positive buzz, but it's odd that we see none of the usual film critics here sharing their take on Blue Beetle. Perhaps that will change soon?
For now, you can read the first social media reaction in the Tweets (Xs?) below.
In Blue Beetle, recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.
When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.
The movie stars Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén, with Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. Angel Manuel Soto directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
Blue Beetle arrives in theaters on August 18.
