The box office numbers for Blue Beetle will likely determine whether the film gets a direct sequel or if Jaime Reyes moves on into the DC Comics cinematic universe and ignores everything that just happened in the Angel Manuel Soto-directed film.
If it's the former, Soto already has an idea that he'd like to explore.
It seems he's keen to explore the homeworld of Becky G's Khaji-Da and her creators, The Reach.
The Reach are intergalactic space conquerors who first appeared in Blue Beetle Vol 7 #12 (April, 2007). For 40,000 years, they profiteered through planetary conquest before running afoul of the Green Lantern Corps.
After signing a non-aggression pact, The Reach developed the Scarabs to take over planets for them, giving them a degree of deniability if the Lanterns ever returned to see if they were up to their old ways. Scarabs are designed to enslave a suitable host and then take over the entire planet. By placing Scarabs on planets thousands of years before they're taken over, The Reach are able to avoid breaking their non-aggression agreement.
"You know, where Khaji comes from," he told Entertainment Weekly. "Let's see if we end up beating up the Reach at one point. For me, it's expansive and the opportunities are so exciting."
