BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Set For $40 Million Weekend
Very early figures are in for this weekend at the North American box office, and while it still appears as if Captain America: The Winter Soldier won't be able to beat Rio 2 to the top spot, the Marvel Studios sequel does look set for another very good weekend. Read on for details!
As expecteed, animated feature Rio 2 is indeed set to take the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, beating Captain America: The Winter Soldier during its second week of release. According to Deadline, the Marvel Studios sequel is expected to drop around 59%, but that's not too bad, especially as Captain America: The First Avenger dropped 61% and Thor: The Dark World suffered a 57% dip. After this weekend, the domestic total will likely reach around $157 million. Internationally, the movie had taken over $207 million as of last weekend, and should soon hit $400 million worldwide. In China alone, Captain America: The Winter Soldier took $39.2 million during its debut, and strong upcoming openings in Brazil and Japan should add even more to its total. After this weekend, the domestic total will be over $175 million. Going back to this weekend, Rio 2 will likely earn a three day total of over $43 million. That means it's unlikely that Captain America will best it, but you never know! Stay tuned for further updates...
UPDATE: The site has now updated their original post, revealing that Rio 2 is now expected to actually reach around $44 million, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier expected to gross between $40.5 - 41.8 million. How much do you guys think the movie will earn?
