BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Set For $40 Million Weekend

Very early figures are in for this weekend at the North American box office, and while it still appears as if Captain America: The Winter Soldier won't be able to beat Rio 2 to the top spot, the Marvel Studios sequel does look set for another very good weekend. Read on for details!

As expecteed, animated feature Rio 2 is indeed set to take the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, beating Captain America: The Winter Soldier during its second week of release. According to Deadline, the Marvel Studios sequel is expected to drop around 59%, but that's not too bad, especially as Captain America: The First Avenger dropped 61% and Thor: The Dark World suffered a 57% dip. After this weekend, the domestic total will likely reach around $157 million. Internationally, the movie had taken over $207 million as of last weekend, and should soon hit $400 million worldwide. In China alone, Captain America: The Winter Soldier took $39.2 million during its debut, and strong upcoming openings in Brazil and Japan should add even more to its total. After this weekend, the domestic total will be over $175 million. Going back to this weekend, Rio 2 will likely earn a three day total of over $43 million. That means it's unlikely that Captain America will best it, but you never know! Stay tuned for further updates...

UPDATE: The site has now updated their original post, revealing that Rio 2 is now expected to actually reach around $44 million, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier expected to gross between $40.5 - 41.8 million. How much do you guys think the movie will earn?

I have seen no promotion for Rio 2 whatsoever other than the basic "turn off your cell phone" moment at the beginning of the theater experience, so I don't know how it's tracking to make that much. C'mon Cap!

I could bet my kidney that TWS will earn more than RIO 2 at the end of their B.O. run

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a great movie, I'm sure it'll make tons of money even if it isn't number one this weekend. If anything makes it lose money this weekend I'd say it's because The Winter Soldier isn't really as kid friendly as other Marvel films. This seems like the kind of comic book movie that's more targeted for people who watch 24 or Homeland, not kids.

Honestly, this doesn't really surprise me. Animated films like these always do make a load of cash. But, I do have a feeling TWS will have the bigger box-office run in total.

Yes, because obviously voice actors for the birds that have also played DC characters toppling Cap 2 obviously translates into a DC win/victory... whackjob.

Exactly like Eisenberg and Hathaway had DC in mind when making Rio 2...Guys a lunatic.

Differences is Man of Steel deserves to loose to Monster's University because it was a superior film. Rio 2 deserves to be Captain 2? Based on what I have heard I really doubt it.

The Rio 2 comment with its voice actors makes zero sense.

I enjoyed TWS last night. My theatre was packed here on Long Island but a lot of kids were also there to see Rio 2.

My favorite part of the movie was Bucky. Awesome work by Sebastian Stan. Makes me wish he had been cast as Luke Skywalkers son in Episode VII. He resembles mark hamil to me.

@TheCaptain

He turned The Lego Movie into a genius move by WB to promote DC and undermine Marvel. Yeah, lunatic is an apt word to describe him. He also harped on about how WB puts out more Oscar films than Disney. That's true but it has no relevance to either Marvel or DC for [frick]'s sake.

Klone - 4/12/2014, 7:35 AM
I think at one point he tried to use the fact that WB has some production involvement with GoT to create a DC > Marvel thread lol.

Yeesh, that's a pretty heavy drop. Shame since it's the MCU's most monetarily deserving film. I guess it's not to bad a drop when compared to The First Avenger but we'll see how this turns out I suppose.

The only area Captain America TWS lacked in was good character development but I was enjoying it too much to even care.

You seem to have a poisoned mind, DCurve. No one is rushing off to see Rio2 because of some link to MoS or DC.

MoS just wasn't very good. TWS is. The end. Get over it.

No, people are more bewildered that you're insinuating it's a victory for DC because Eisenberg and Hathaway are involved. That's what I find [frick]ing insane, not you trolling Marvel. Though you're lowering yourself to their levels, they do sorta deserve it. Well, some of them.

Cap 2 was easily Marvels best movie yet. It was far superior to the avengers even though its BO won't reach that level.

How can weekend BO numbers be in when Saturday matinees haven't even started yet???
