CAPTAIN AMERICA Star Chris Evans Open To Continuing On As The Sentinel Of Liberty Post-AVENGERS 4
A recent interview with Chris Evans has shed some more light on his Marvel future after 2019's Avengers 4 and it sounds like the good Captain might not be quite ready to hang up his shield just yet.
During this same exact week in March 2010, Chris Evans signed on for a six-picture deal to play Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America in something that would later become known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and now, seven years later, his time has come... well, maybe.
Evans, to date, has made five starring appearances in the MCU: Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War as well as an uncredited cameo in Thor: The Dark World, which didn't count against his contract. However, once he begins filming the two-part Avengers: Infinity War/Avengers 4 this April, his contractual obligations will finally be fulfilled, which could mean the 2019 sequel will be the final time we see Evans suit up as the Sentinel of Liberty.
A recent profile with Esquire revealed that Evans was probably done with Cap after he finished filming the final two films left on his contract and that he wanted to shift gears for a while afterward so that he could pursue different kinds of projects, like his upcoming film Gifted. He also touched on possibly exploring his passion for directing, something he hasn't been able to tackle for the better part of the last decade, due to Marvel's lengthy filming schedules and subsequent promotional tours, which combined with the rigorous training he has to undergo for each film can be quite the time commitment.
Now, while that wasn't the most promising of updates regarding his Marvel future, Evans' recent comments to Collider might lift your spirits just a tad.
“It’s really not up to me. My contract is up. I’m not going to sit here and say, “No more.” I think Hugh Jackman has made 47 Wolverine movies, and they somehow keep getting better. It’s a character I love, and it’s a factory that really knows what they’re doing. The system is sound, over there. They make great movies. If they weren’t kicking out quality, I’d have a different opinion. But, everything Marvel does seems to be cinema gold. And like I said, I love the character. The only reason it would end is ‘cause my contract is up. After Avengers 4, my contract is done. Talk to Marvel. If we engage further, I’d be open to it. I love the character. It’s almost like high school. You certainly always look to senior year, and then, all of a sudden, senior year happens and you’re like, “I don’t know if I’m ready to go.” It’s tough thinking about not playing the guy.”
This statement doesn't really suggest anything one way or another as he could still walk away in 2019, but they do more or less confirm that he is at least open to the idea of returning to his career-defining role for more adventures as the leader of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Also, if history is any indicator, there's a strong possibility Disney will pay big bucks to keep Evans onboard the franchise he helped build, similar to what they did with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. in October 2014 & April 2016 when they re-upped him for Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, respectively.
