New CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Details On 'Steve Rogers'' Arc And S.H.I.E.L.D.

While the sequel's screenwriter explains how they plan to make Cap less boring, and give him more of an arc, Empire mag's spread on Captain America: The Winter Soldier reveals pivotal S.H.I.E.L.D. info.

Compared to the quirkiness of Tony Stark or the otherworldly Thor, Steve Rogers' all around good guy values can apparently come off as “boring” on-screen. Speaking with Empire magazine, co-screenwriter Christopher Markus explained how Captain America: The Winter Soldier will give the Super Soldier depth.“What helps us get past the pious Boy Scout that he could turn into is that he doesn't really want to be this guy,” he says. “He would prefer to be Steve Rogers just walking down the street, helping people sometimes.. He felt the call when the War came. He's kind of the still centre and things happen around him and are influenced by him. It's interesting in this movie, for instance, to watch his relationship with Black Widow, who of course has a very different outlook. It can make it difficult with executives who often want arcs. It's very difficult not to sound lazy when you go, 'Well, he doesn't really have an arc'”

Though exact details as to what S.H.I.E.L.D. is up to in Captain America: The Winter Soldier have been kept to a minimum, the latest issue of Empire magazine also reveals that the defense organization will be using surveillance in the form of drones. They not only pose a problem for Steve Rogers - “this isn't freedom, it's fear” - the the development of the drones will have roots in current real-world controversies. “What made '70s thrillers interesting is that it was a very complicated time.We were peeling back the curtain with Watergate and realizing how corrupt the system was,” says co-director Anthony Russo. “Now, again with the proliferation of social media, you can blow the whistle on the NSA and it can be round the world in 30 seconds. And we have the morality of drones. It is right to preemptively use them to kill suspected terrorists prior to any sort of trial? So the times we're living in are even more complex.” What do you think?

Some time ago, Hasbro previewed their Captain America: The Winter Soldier toy line which included what appeared to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. drone. While it was said to have no connection to the film, with today's news, that's probably untrue and we may already know how the drones will look in the sequel. Hopefully they'll be more distinctive from those Hammer drones from Iron Man 2.

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy — the Winter Soldier. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014.

hmm...
this gives me intrigue as well... the best thrillers from the 70's are very few. those that were good came to be some of the most memorable great movies ever but many fell very short.
Among the greats of that time
Taxi Driver (1976)
The Conversation (1974)
Chinatown (1974)
Dirty Harry (1971)
Jaws (1975)...
Get Carter (1971)
Straw Dogs (1971)
most of these movies captured the essence of the time but... most of them didn't really mention what was going on with the government... it just same a sense of the time which made them incredibly memorable.

...wait... Cap doesn't have a character arc in the movie? This could go really bad really quickly...
Every other marvel movie has had a character arc for the main character, even the weakest one(IM2) had Tony go through a character arc.

That's what I like to see. The corruption of SHIELD is something I'm really looking forward to.

THEONEABOVEALL- if it wasnt cap,i would be worried about the charater arc thing but it is Cap and Cap in the comics doesnt really have character arcs, he remains the same good hearted strong willed soldier and the whole movie is about how his black and white view on the world clases with modern poilitics where the area is grey so its him resisting that and not accepting that

Wow. This all sound awesome!!!! I can't wait.

And yeah, The Government will create Ultron.

I bet in this movie phase 2 was initiated like hinted in The Avengers.

And I bet they receive hydra weapons from Baron VonStruker.

@ezio
interesting. But considering the source material for this adaptation, I would expect him to have some sort of learning or character arc by expanding his relationship with Bucky and Black Widow and Shield. I am pretty sure he is gonna learn a lot and evolve over the arc of the movie I think they were exaggerating by saying he doesn't have much of a character arc.

@Nomis...
I was also referencing the most memorable thrillers from the time... that is more of a political drama than thriller. It I think is a crime drama and not a thriller like what was being referenced in the article

Theoneaboveall- im pretty sure his relationships with people will change such as bucky or shield etc, that will be the arc, but he himself will more or less remain the same

I agree. I think it will work for the best like you pointed out cause the character doesn't have much to grow either. Good points

Nomis-oh man,i forgot about that, i think the arc will be how his relationship with shield or bucky changes but he wont have a singular character arc, he will more or less remain the same,maybe he will break off with shield at the end

I like most of what I've heard. I'm a little nervous about a writer that feels the need to apologize for Cap being "boring." Just because he's an actual good guy doesn't mean he's boring. There are a LOT of really good story arcs over the years and Marvel was really a little lazy falling back on the Winter Soldier story so quickly. It may be very good, but there are some GREAT stories from the 70's and 80's. Stories where we can see that Cap embodies what our nation could and should be. His idealism is interesting because he NEVER strays from doing the right thing. In a world where nearly everyone strays and hides behind the "shades of grey" argument, Cap finds a way to win against the odds without compromising his ideals. It's made even better by the fact that he is one of the least "super" of all the heroes. Given all the controversy with the NSA and the TSA and the ever present encroachment on our civil rights, this could be a VERY interesting movie. I hope they do it well.

It's funny that they say that because the system, the government, and our political leaders have never been so corrupt. Hopefully they show how far gone our political system is and Cap is still standing for the old guard of the American ways.

The Drone thing makes sense for Age of Ultron.. Probably Ultron is a SHIELD drone created by Stark and Banner when they were consulting to each other after IM3?

How does someone coming straight out of segregation need Watergate to demonstrate to them that the system is corrupt? There must have been something in the "whites only" water fountains.

ALL times are complicated.
