There have been persistent rumors that Chris Evans might be set to return as Steve Rogers (a trade report even claimed that he'd signed a new deal to reprise the role back in 2021), but the actor hasn't shown much enthusiasm about the prospect of taking up the shield again.
Evans was asked about a possible MCU return while appearing at C2E2 in Chicago over the weekend, and the Ghosted star said that he does believe there are more "stories to tell," but is clearly still hesitant to revisit the character after bringing Steve's story to such a satisfying, poignant close in Avengers: Endgame.
"It's tough, because look, I love that role deeply," he said. "He means so much to me, and I really do think there's more Steve Rogers stories tell, sure. But at the same time, I'm very, very precious with it. I'd become, you know, it's like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don't want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the period of time and in a way, it really landed so well. As much as I'm connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people. It doesn't quite feel right right now."
Rogers was mentioned in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but we haven't actually learned what became of the older version of the hero who returned to bestow the mantle on Sam Wilson in the Infinity Saga Finale (we're going to assume he's not actually on the moon).
Of course, the nature of The Multiverse means Evans could still return as a Cap Variant, but is that something anyone would really want to see after he cemented such a strong legacy as the Star-Spangled Avenger?
