Chris Evans Says Returning To The MCU As Steve Rogers "Doesn't Quite Feel Right"

Despite rumors to the contrary, it doesn't sound like Ghosted star Chris Evans has any intention of reprising the role of Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

There have been persistent rumors that Chris Evans might be set to return as Steve Rogers (a trade report even claimed that he'd signed a new deal to reprise the role back in 2021), but the actor hasn't shown much enthusiasm about the prospect of taking up the shield again.

Evans was asked about a possible MCU return while appearing at C2E2 in Chicago over the weekend, and the Ghosted star said that he does believe there are more "stories to tell," but is clearly still hesitant to revisit the character after bringing Steve's story to such a satisfying, poignant close in Avengers: Endgame.

"It's tough, because look, I love that role deeply," he said. "He means so much to me, and I really do think there's more Steve Rogers stories tell, sure. But at the same time, I'm very, very precious with it. I'd become, you know, it's like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don't want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the period of time and in a way, it really landed so well. As much as I'm connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people. It doesn't quite feel right right now."

Rogers was mentioned in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but we haven't actually learned what became of the older version of the hero who returned to bestow the mantle on Sam Wilson in the Infinity Saga Finale (we're going to assume he's not actually on the moon).

Of course, the nature of The Multiverse means Evans could still return as a Cap Variant, but is that something anyone would really want to see after he cemented such a strong legacy as the Star-Spangled Avenger?

@0bstreperous - Longevity is why nobody cares about these characters in comics anymore. The real surprise is the restraint some of these actors have when Marvel comes calling to milk that cash cow.

@0bstreperous @UncleHarm1 - you know what I actually agree with u that longevity is why people don't care about these characters in comics no more. One of the best things about Manga( at least 90% of them) is that the story eventually ends. Marvel and DC have been doing the same shit with the same characters for 70+ years.

@Taonrey - that’s partially on the readers of American comics , they don’t want the status quo to change and the companies know that

@Taonrey - I think the doubling down on unpopular creative decisions, has really hurt superhero comics in recent years. They'll either be hesitant to progress a story/character arc, or they'll switch to a bad status quo, for way too long.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - gotta rip that bandaid off, it's too late now but they definitely should have done that in the 80s or 90s

@Taonrey - I 100% agree, nostalgia is a strong ass drug for some people me included but I’m also of the mindset that things need to evolve or stay the same

Disgustingly ungrateful. It's not as if he's making high art post-2020.

@CoHost - Chris Evans: “I love that role deeply. He means so much to me. I was a part of something that was so special for the period of time and in a way, it really landed so well.“

Some guy on the internet: Disgustingly ungrateful.

@CoHost - he's literally talking about how great the role was, and that he can't simply return but it has to be done right.

What's with this current age of movies that actually advocating for quality storytelling is considered disrespectful? There's also Henry cavill who was labeled as difficult for trying to make the Witcher closer to the source material, and Jenna Ortega who was considered disrespectful for sticking up for what she thought was best for Wednesday EVEN THOUGH EVERYTHING SHE BROUGHT TO THE SHOW WERE THE MOST PRAISED ELEMENTS OF THE SHOW!

Chris Evans understands how storytelling works here. They gave Steve Rogers an emotional ending. And those emotions are taken away if you simply bring him back (and are cheapened if it's Evans again just from another dimension). God forbid the guy wants to maintain what made the movies great to begin with.

Good, things need to have some consequences, when characters are done they should be done.

After secret wars I see a complete reboot. Some actors staying and others leaving.

RdJ and Evans haven't shot an MCU film for 8 years by the time secret wars comes out. That's enough of a break if you ask me.

If they come back I hope it's rebooted in particular ways. RdJ would play a great iron man if they adapted Demon in a bottle storyline. Leaning heavier on the adult themes.

As for cap I hope we get more of a political thriller like winter soldier but it leads to the death of cap. Obviously stretched out over multiple films🥲

@AmazingFILMporg - I agree. I think Marvel will save X-Men for after Secret Wars. That way they can reboot Iron Man / Cap etc and have Avengers v X-Men type projects.

I think this would also help bring in a new generation of fans who may feel overwhelmed trying to start the MCU from scratch

@Knightrider -

Exactly! After secret wars it's gonna be a reboot. I see feige keeping what works and starting all over of what didn't work. It makes sense narratively and financially.💪

@AmazingFILMporg - The reboot is already in effect... its just depends on which universe in the multiverse they decide to let the cameras roll in and capture what is happening already.
