Four Things That Could Have Made CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 An Even Better Movie

Four Things That Could Have Made CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 An Even Better Movie

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a good movie, but here are four ways that I feel could have made it even better.

Editorial Opinion

I’ll start off by saying that I genuinely enjoyed Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Overall it was likely on-par with the first movie, and thus the second best movie in the MCU (the first being Iron Man). CA:TWS was also far superior to (IMO) the awful Iron Man 3 and mediocre Thor: The Dark World.

More importantly, however, it did the one thing that nearly all the Disney Marvel films missed - that is, have some social commentary and meaningful character development.

That being said, there were a few things that I believe could have been done to make the movie even better.

4. DON’T INCLUDE THE FALCON (OR LIMIT HIS ROLE)

While Falcon was cool to see on screen, he honestly served little purpose in the movie. Had he been cut out, or at most made a cameo it would have served the plot better. What he added to the story could have been done in another way Including Falcon means less time for Captain America. Which leads to my next point...

3. CUT BACK ON BLACK WIDOW’S SCREEN TIME A BIT

Black Widow has a very important role in the film, however, had her screen time been cut back just a bit (perhaps introduce her at a later point in the movie or have her in only specific scenes) we’d have more time to see Steve’s day-to-day life and own interactions. Further, her constant joking/conversations about dating became tiresome and largely out of place.

2. BETTER ESTABLISH AGENT 13 AKA SHARON CARTER

Agent 13 is an important character in Captain America’s life in the comics, yet she only gets a handful of scenes in the movie, none of which establish her connection to Peggy - likely leaving most movie-goers unsure of the entire point of having her in the movie.

1. FOCUS MORE ON THE WINTER SOLDIER

The biggest problem I had with the movie, was its failure to live up to the promise the title suggests. The movie is called Captain America: The Winter Soldier, yet plays out as AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D: THE RETURN OF HYDRA. The Winter Soldier is given so little focus for the majority of the movie (especially compared to Alexander Pierce and/or Crossbones) and is given no development. He essentially comes off as a mere, mindless goon until the last 10 minutes - which is incredibly disappointing.

Thus, had the movie focused more on Captain America vs the Winter Soldier, with a larger supporting role for Agent 13, it could have elevated it from a good superhero movie to one of the greatest ever made.

But overall I liked Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and am interested to see where they take these characters in the future.

My score: 7.8/10

I like FALCON a lot.

I dunno it was pretty much one of the best ever MARVEL STUDIOS movies so far made!

@LEEE777

I agree its one of the best Marvel Studios films, and I liked Falcon, just felt he was kinda unneeded in the movie.

I thought the introduction of Sharon Carter was good and I loved not only The Falcon but how they used The Winter Soldier himself. It still is one of the greatest superhero movies ever made

You are alone on numbers 4, 3, and 2. I'm glad they gave Black Widow more time, they've finally established her character in the proper way. I thought Agent 14 had enough time as it was. Other than her relationship with Cap she's honestly not that interesting. And Falcon was awesome. So why cut something awesome from an awesome film?

The only point I agree with you on is Falcon. Sure, I was satisfied that he didn't turn out to be cheesy in any way, shape or form, but he didn't exactly serve much to the story... Well, if you exclude muscle and (little) moral support. I think it's attributed to what Joe Russo said, which was that Falcon was barely in the script until Mackie was cast. I'm sure if they had planned his appearance from the beginning, we could have seen more development (which I prefer over Sharon tbh).

Really enjoyed his presence in the movie, but it wasn't needed.

I feel like Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a 'Black Ops' Avengers. So I'm glad they had the number of heroes in it they did.

Nick @ K k cool, the reason Steve went to see him in the first place was because he can't be everywhere at once and needed his help as much as he needed Black Widow's help too.

Nice read, btw I totally agree with you on Iron Man 3.

@ALmight

Don't get me wrong; I absolutely LOVED Falcon in this movie. I'm just saying that at the end of the day, he didn't need to be there.

Of course he was there, and he was amazing.

you are crazy bro! ; )

falcon was a great addition.

this is thew first time black widow was actually awesome.

cap cant do anything by himself he needs a team a frikin captain.

sharon carter had the perfect amount of screen time. we didnt need her for more than what we got. not what the film is about. its about cap dealing with a shady organization not meeting the neice of his ex flame and starting a romance. it was poking at it which will make for a better cap 3. this is the first great cap film. the first avenger was ridiculoujs. after getting the first half right they dropped the ball to get cap into the modern day.

we got a lot of cap screen time. he had his shield with him for every scene basically. every other scene he was in he was fighting. and he was actually looking like cap with all his moves.

youre crazy for nitpicking some of the best stuff in this film.

no i am not trolling. youre just crazy bro.

falcon had some of the best action scenes and he served support for cap when he needed it. if it was just widow and cap the film wouldnt have been as fun.

But then again, that's my complaint about Hawkeye, Rhodey, Heimidall, etc...

Wuut.
Falcon and BW were both great.
Agent 13 had a minor role and that's fine. They didn't even tell us who she was, so they're clearly leaving that for a sequel.

I agree that this was Widow's best outing. Also Falcon and Widow are too MAJOR characters as far as showing Steve's character. Widow is his complete opposite, and served as a perfect foil for him. Falcon is a comrade, and almost like a modern age mirror for Steve. Both were essential to show Steve's journey in this story.

Sharon was clearly being set up for more screentime in the third movie, but it was a good transition from Peggy to her this time.

I guess Winter Soldier could have been used more, but definitely a less-is-more type character. Better to leave the audience wanting more. Want more Winter Soldier? Buy the bluray and wear it out.

No Falcon? Less Black Widow? The movie didn't have social commentary?

jaysin420
jaysin420 - 4/4/2014, 6:59 PM
I agree with the last one, they should have explained what happened to Bucky a little better. I know there was a quick flashback but it really didn't explain what they did exactly, unless maybe I missed something?

@JaySin420
I dunno...seemed pretty straight forward. He fell in the first movie, they found him and he ended up with Zola. His arm was replaced and he was enhanced, then kept on ice and brainwashed further.
Nick56
Nick56 - 4/4/2014, 7:49 PM
Woah lol I didn't say half the things you guys are saying I said haha....I liked Falcon and loved Black Widow but I felt Falcon was completely unneeded in the movie, and Black Widow was with Cap in nearly every scene, would have been nice to have seen more scenes with just Cap himself.

And PAF I clearly say that this movie HAS social commentary which is something I thought was great.

Maybe some of you should read the actual reasons instead of just the headline.

Nick56 - 4/4/2014, 7:53 PM
A character simply being "awesome" isn't a legitimate reason to have him in the movie.
ruadh
ruadh - 4/4/2014, 8:04 PM
I gave storytelling reasons that were more than "awesome".

Also, having a bunch of scenes of a character by themself makes for a really boring movie, unless you have a ton of narration. You need other characters to interact and show their characteristics. Each character serves a distinct story telling role. Black Widow and Falcon were two of the most important ones. To diminish their roles, or remove completely, will actually only take away from the impact of Captain America himself as a character.

Ruadh has nailed.

I felt WS had the perfect amount of screen time. He was, as Rumlow called him "The Asset."

Falcon showed Steve that he isn't alone. The "Some stuff you leave there and some you bring back with you..." quote comes to mind.

Widow represented the moral ambiguity of shield. The conflicting personalities of someone who is black or white and someone who lives in the grey area was nailed perfectly.

This film gets better with each viewing. Seen it 3 times and will be seeing it a few more till spidey comes out on April 17th.

Your trippin guy I think it needed a Hawkeye reference or something. Also how about The Winter Soldier theme music.
EXODUZ
EXODUZ - 4/4/2014, 8:52 PM
Dude I agreed with you on all points except Black Widow, while I also found her, "you should ask out..." comments to be tiring, her interactions played well with Steve, and I'm glad she had as much screen time as she did. Just keep the dating advice a little lower.

It actually would have worked well if Sharon Carter was more in the film, that way Widow could have been teasing Steve about her instead of giving dating advice.
Nick56
Nick56 - 4/4/2014, 9:00 PM
@ruadh Not you, some other people were just saying he was "awesome" You bring up some good points but I felt that it could have been done better in the movie. Thanks for the feedback though.

@EXODUZ Thanks. Yeah I liked her in the movie, just think some of the interactions could have been handled differently.

Nick56
Nick56 - 4/4/2014, 9:03 PM
@Starkasm Yeah I'll probs need to watch it again, these were just my initial reactions. But I really felt that they should have gone a little deeper into the WS. And again, I didn't feel that way about the Falcon, they could have gotten that point across easily in another way.

@MCUfan1 ummmm ok. Technically Black Widow was wearing an arrow necklace, so its a bit of a reference. The music was good

To many damn gifs on this site as of late. Oh and Iron Man was a terrific film, and Thor The Dark World was just plain boring and an utter waste of film.

showing less of the winter soldier was great, keep him a mystery. what falcon? I mean he was amazing... Carter wasn't the focus, which was good. she's set up well for the third one.

Spoilers!!! my opinions on each character.

Cap: Perfect, that is who he was in the comics.
Falcon: Perfect, can't wait to see him more
Black Widow: Set up perfectly for some info in Avengers
Winter Soldier: Amazing! Almost cried at the end.
Pierce: Meh, I mean he did exactly what he had to in the movie.
Rumlow: Great! Now that he's still alive he needs to come back with the mask in the third.
Zola: great! That's as close to a wlaking robot as we will get. I like it, he essentially was zola from the comics, just didn't walk. Really glad they kept him around, and felt he was done justice.

Cap three: Sharon more, Falcon more, Introduce US Agent (Though just him, not his superpowers) Rumlow working for Baaron Zemo. NO RED SKULL! He did his job, don't bring him back.

"Winter Soldier: Amazing! Almost cried at the end."

Haw! Glad it wasn't just me. They really played it perfectly. Didn't beat it to death in the flashbacks. Perfect tone. Made me very happy I stayed after the credits.

@Nick56

Also so glad "too many villains" wasn't a reason. People seem to feel ASM2 has too many, and this had even more, with out even counting all the henchman etc. Rumlow, WS, Batroc, and then of course Pierce and Zola.
BubSnikt
BubSnikt - 4/4/2014, 9:34 PM
Rumlow and Falcon were my favorite parts of the movie. Zola might set up for Ultron? The only thing is that I wish Pierce turned out to be the elder Zemo. Fantastic movie overall!!!

Destined

Disagee strongly with all these points bc what you want cut out made the movie. Scarlett and Anthony were gold. And don't get me started on useless Agent 13. She should be glad they even cameoed her in this movie b/c she was the one NOT needed tbh. And Bucky's moment is coming. These are terrible ideas.
