CAPTAIN MARVEL: Breaking Down The Biggest Reveals And Easter Eggs In The Second Trailer - SPOILERS
Following the release of the second trailer for Captain Marvel, we take a closer look at the epic sneak peek to bring you all the biggest new reveals and Easter Eggs from the upcoming Marvel Studios movie!
As promised, Marvel Studios released a brand new trailer for Captain Marvel last night and it definitely didn't disappoint. Featuring jaw-dropping action scenes, plenty of huge reveals and moments which are bound to get fans talking, if you weren't excited before, you most definitely will be now.
Today, we're taking an in-depth look at the second trailer for Marvel Studios' latest to highlight the most significant Easter Eggs and scenes which not only shed some light on what to expect from this movie, but quite possibly Avengers 4 ahead of its release next May.
From clues about the Kree/Skrull War to Carol Danvers' incredible powers and some big changes to the hero's origin story, there's a lot to unpack here and quite a bit you may have ended up missing. So, to check out this trailer breakdown, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button.
Punching An Old Lady
Bizarrely, the first Captain Marvel trailer received some backlash because it depicted Carol Danvers punching an elderly woman in the face. Well, Marvel Studios doesn't shy away from that meme-worthy moment here but it's now made clear that she is indeed a shape-shifting Skrull.
What's interesting is just how formidable a fighter the alien appears to be as it unleashes some impressive fighting skills in a bid to slow Carol down (which ultimately proves to be fruitless).
"Noble Warrior Heroes"
Everything we've seen of the Kree both in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (not that the show really "counts" in the MCU proper) points to them being villainous.
Carol, however, clearly has a very different interpretation of them and while that could be because she's been brainwashed or has only seen one side of the aliens, something tells me that it will be this ongoing Kree/Skrull War which sees their true colours finally come to light.
The Crash That Changes Everything
It's hard to say what Marvel Studios has planned for Captain Marvel's origin story but there are definitely some clues in this trailer and we can probably piece together at least a rough outline.
From what's shown here, it seems as if when Carol crashes her jet, she's exposed to the radiation given out by the explosion of the Psyche-Magnetron (just like her comic book counterpart) before being rescued by the Kree and fully transformed into a half human/half Kree being they can use in their war against the Skrulls.
It also seems as if a Skrull was there when she got her powers and I can't help but wonder if we're going to get a twist of sorts where it's revealed that they're maybe not as bad as the Kree claim.
Carol Danvers Loses Her Memories
The comic book version of Captain Marvel has suffered from amnesia and in order to tell her origin story in a slightly different manner, that's a plot device being used in this movie as well.
There's clearly something in the hero's past which is key to unlocking those memories (she pretty much says so herself) and we're no doubt going to discover what that is right alongside her.
The Supreme Intelligence
During the trailer, we get our first official look at Annette Bening as, presumably, the leader of the Kree. It wasn't until the poster was released on Sunday that we even received confirmation she's in the film but if I had to hazard a guess about her true identity, I would be willing to place money on the actress being The Supreme Intelligence.
It's hard to imagine spending time on the Kree homeworld without being introduced to that being but a massive jelly-like face in a jar really isn't the easiest thing to pull off, so no one could blame Marvel Studios for reimagining the character for modern audiences.
Reborn
For those of you wondering what leads to Carol Danvers becoming the most powerful hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this trailer definitely provides some clues as we see her receiving a Kree blood transfusion which is bound to radically alter her DNA.
Throw in that explosion early on and it's clear that Captain Marvel is a forced to be reckoned with.
Inside S.H.I.E.L.D.
This looks very similar to the hangar Nick Fury showed Steve Rogers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and my guess is that this is S.H.I.E.L.D. starting to create more and more weaponry to try and protect the world (which will ultimately lead to the Helicarrier becoming part of the MCU, quite possibly thanks to some salvaged Kree or Skrull technology).
Either way, this leads to one of the coolest Easter Eggs in the trailer for Marvel fans...
A Prototype Quinjet
Make no mistake about it, this is definitely an early version of the Quinjets S.H.I.E.L.D. uses in The Avengers that Tony Stark later modifies as a means of transport for Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
It was a great idea to include this here and a recent LEGO set actually revealed that Nick will also take flight in one of them in order to help Carol battle some Skrulls (there's nothing to say we'll see that play out, of course, given past experience). Regardless, it's funny seeing what a different sort of attitude the younger Fury has in this movie.
How The Helmet Works
The vast majority of fans didn't think that we'd see Captain Marvel's mohawk in this movie but the trailer finally reveals how that will work and also why it's been included beyond it looking cool.
As you can see in the trailer, the helmet forms in the same way as Star-Lord and pulls Carol's hair up into a mohawk, presumably to stop it from getting in the way when she's flying into action.
The Skrulls
Marvel Studios is really holding off when it comes to revealing too much about the Skrulls and we've yet to see them use their shape-shifting abilities. This trailer makes it clear that they're looking for a war against the Kree, though, and it definitely appears as if some improvements have been made to their appearance with VFX when compared to that first official still from Entertainment Weekly.
Yon-Rogg?
Earlier this week, some Funko Pops leaked online which named Jude Law's character as Yon-Rogg, a Captain Marvel villain who actually makes more sense to include in this movie than Mar-Vell.
The officially released images replaced "Yon-Rogg" with "Star Commander" so now we don't know what to believe and this trailer definitely does a good job of making Law's character come across like a villain. Whether or not he is is hard to say and it could be a case of misdirection.
Whatever the case may be, don't be shocked if the amnesiac Carol Danvers is given the "Mar-Vell" codename, hence why she ends up being called Captain Marvel...
Captain Marvel Vs. The Kree
While Carol is wearing her classic comic book costume in the second half of the trailer, we see what appears to be her taking down some Kree soldiers, a sign that their villainous motivations will ultimately end up being revealed. The scene flashes by very quickly so it's hard to say for sure.
Captain Marvel taking on both the Kree and Skrulls would be a heck of a lot of fun to see, though.
War
There's only one glimpse of Ronan the Accuser in this latest trailer and that shows him watching a war outside his ship, presumably as the Kree battle the Skrulls. The question is, is that Earth beneath the warzone or Hala? There's a popular fan theory doing the rounds that Marvel will find a real-life event to explain the war above our skies in the movie but we'll have to wait and see.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Director
Ben Mendohlson is playing the villainous Skrull leader Talos in Captain Marvel but he'll also be shape-shifting into the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and something tells me that he's leading these men (aliens?) in pursuit of Nick Fury and Carol Danvers as they steal a Quinjet.
It's hard to escape the feeling that this movie will be an origin story just as much for Carol as it is for Nick so him rebelling against his superiors and ultimately being named Director definitely makes sense. Notable by his absence throughout this sneak peek, though, is Agent Coulson!
Binary Unleashed
Well, if Marvel Studios was looking for a way to sell this movie, the final sequence definitely does the trick!
As Captain Marvel blasts through the sky (not all that differently to Iron Man in The Avengers), she effortlessly destroys spaceships and it's easy now to see why Nick Fury decided to reach out to her to help take down Thanos once and for all.
If anyone can stand up to the Mad Titan, it will be Carol, and it's going to be interesting seeing just how much Marvel ends up exploring the hero's "Binary" persona in this adventure.
Is That How Nick Fury Loses His Eye?
Many fans have been disappointed by Chewie being renamed Goose in Captain Marvel but could that be because there's more to this "cat" than meets the eye?
Beyond how weird it is to see Fury making a fuss of Carol's pet, speculation is running rampant that this cat is really a Skrull in disguise that will ultimately be responsible for costing the future S.H.I.E.L.D. Director his eye. After all, that would certainly go some way in explaining those scratches!
