Marvel Studios Delays Entire Phase 4 Slate With THE MARVELS Pushed To 2023; INDIANA JONES 5 Also Delayed

Marvel Studios has made some big changes to its 2022 and 2023 release schedule, pulling a couple of untitled movies and delaying everything from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to Thor: Love and Thunder.

Just when we thought all those release date delays had finally ended, Disney has announced a slew of changes that, quite honestly, aren't going to make you happy.

Marvel Studios' Phase 4 slate now looks set to kick off later than expected as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has moved from March 25, 2022 to May 6, 2022. Thor: Love and Thunder has also slipped down the calendar and is now heading our way on July 8, 2022 instead of May 6, 2022.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has lost its summer release date (July 29, 2022) and is going to arrive in theaters on November 11, 2022. That's it for the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year as Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, has been shifted from November 11, 2022 to February 17, 2023

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has also been affected; while it had been scheduled for February 17, 2023, we'll now see it on July 28, 2023. Worryingly, Disney has pulled two "Untitled Marvel" titles from the calendar altogether and those are no longer heading our way on July 28, 2023 and October 6, 2023. However, one of them has shifted from October 11, 2023 to November 3, 2023.

In other news, Indiana Jones 5 has shifted from July 29, 2022 to June 30, 2023. That's not overly surprising after star Harrison Ford was injured on set, but it's obviously still a bummer for fans.

There's a lot to digest here, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has shifted once again. We have no idea what sort of impact this has on those Disney+ TV shows as a slate hasn't been revealed.

What a weird way of saying one movie was taken off, while the others' release date was shifted. What bad writing.

@TheSnyderGod - Says the guy who based their account and entire opinion base on Zack Snyder...

How many times do you worship a day? Is it like one of those things where you all face the same direction, no matter where you are in the world and pray to Snyder a few times a day?

Or is it more like it's up to you, and you pray to him when you have time?

How many miracles has he performed? Can he walk on water and spin hay into gold?

Pathetic....

At least now we won’t have Doctor Strange or the Batman eat each other’s box office numbers. Gives both franchises more room to breathe.

My guess is those two 2023 movies were Fantastic Four and Blade, although the former can still be released in 2023 if it takes that november release.

But anyway, it makes sense. Eternals, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Thor were all a little close to each other, so this should give it enough breathing room.

@eagc1995 - could also be DP3 was early 2024 and Blade now takes that spot. But either way, I think Reynolds' sabbatical does factor into these delays

I mean, it's smart to move to a month without Batman just to get the most $$$ they can.

Just like video games, I don't mind some delays. Let's them finish shit up and all. I also think the 2 movies off the schedule are Deadpool 3 and Blade. Reynolds being on sabbatical from acting, gives them some time to readjust and Blade is just starting their work on it with director/writers. Those movies were a bit far out so they don't need a concrete release date yet.

@Menks123 - was thinking the same thing with Deadpool 3 and Reynolds' sabbatical as also being a cause. Do wonder if we'll ever see DP3 on the big screen now though

@Menks123 - Batman would be in its 4th weekend when Strange opened, what exactly is Batman in its 4th weekend doing to Dr Strange?

If it were both the same day then yeah its stupid and wouldnt happen to release two huge movies like that at the same time but Batman would have 3 weeks to do its thing before Strange dropped and then Strange would do its thing for a month.

@Menks123 -

I think they wanted Dr.Strange to be the MCU "MAIN EVENT" film for 2022 by giving it the traditional
early May opening slot. Dr.Strange is more typical of a summer "End of the world" blockbuster than Thor
which may come off better as a mid summer "comic relief" more light hearted action adventure film
that can take the edge off for audiences after 2 months of high stakes event movies, and before
we go back to a more serious genre film when Black Adam drops at the end of July 2022.

These seem like some smart moves by Marvel to recognize the general superhero genre landscape and
to position their movies to play off other studios films the best way possible.

I don't have any inside scoop, but I think the Black Panther move to November 11th along with some
internal production issues, will cause WB to move the Flash into Aquaman 2s mid December 2022 spot
and the Aquaman sequel moves into 2023 to give WB another film to offer along with Shazam:Fury of the Gods. Throw in the just (re) announced Wonder Woman 3, and that gives WB three DCEU sequels for
that year.

@bkmeijer - Disney goes out of their way to mention a specific creative property (Deadpool) during a huge company acquisition (Fox) and you are worried that they won't release a Deadpool 3 movie at all in the theaters?
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 10/18/2021, 5:26 PM
@JonC - I relate it more to Reynolds' sabbatical. Think a direct to streaming movie is not as large of a production as a big screen movie, so maybe if he returns from his sabbatical he isn't immediately going back to doing big movies

2022: Doctor Strange, Thor, Black Panther

2023: The Marvels, Guardians 3, Ant-Man and the Wasp 2, Fantastic Four

2024: Blade, Captain America 4, Shang-Chi 2, Spider-Man 4

@bkmeijer - there won't be anymore Spider-Man MCU movies mate. Holland will be trapped in the Sonyverse with "No Way Home" at the end of this film. That's why he just said they view the film at the end of the franchise. Because it is.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 10/18/2021, 12:41 PM
@globaltravels - yup. The MCU had leverage, and ironically FFH making 1.1 billion almost blew that, but what did blow it was even more ironic: 3 MCU movies without China won’t reach NWH, guaranteed. I don’t mean together I mean none of the 3 separately. Also Venom is doing well and people are sure to tune in to Morbius just off the brand recognition in the trailer and who knows what the next trailer will show.

Dang it.

I don't think that Holland will be trapped in the Sonyverse after "No Way Home". If that were
the case, Sony would not .........................................spoilers..................................................
have gotten permission from Marvel to bring Venom to the MCU.

I think what will happen is this.

Spider-Man,and Venom will form their own corner of the MCU where they and other Sonyverse characters will interact with each other.

Morbious and other spinoffs such as the Sinister Six, Silver Sable, Mile Morales, and more, will be introduced in these Sony-produced films which will also be free to reference events and characters from the MCU, even though those characters will not, with the possible exception of the former
Netflix Marvel characters Daredevil and Kingpin, appear in Sony-produced films.

This way you can have a Spider-Man vs the Sinister Six film using the MCU developed characters
and the actors (Michael Keaton) who played them without having them jump universes.

When Sony reversed course on its post-FFH decision to remove Spider-Man from the MCU into
their own Sonyverse, they reached a deal where Marvel would produce one more Sony film
(No Way Home) and one MCU film featuring a Spider-Man.

That could be Multiverse of Madness, but I don't think it is. What could be happening is that
Spider-Man goes to his own corner of the MCU with other Sony characters and that corner
would technically still be in the MCU.

Spider-Man would still be a known character in the MCU and would be name dropped in
various Marvel films, but somehow always busy elsewhere or otherwise unavailable.

Marvel would be free to ignore other Sonyverse characters such as Venom and events relating
specifically to them except in the most general terms, such as "I heard Spider-Man fought
a monster version of himself in New York a few months ago"

Spider-Man would do his Venom crossover film and appear in other Sonyverse films before
reappearing in the MCU in a major crossover film such as Avengers 5.

When asked by the other Avengers where he has been since NWH he could just say.

"I was just busy in Queens being your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man"
