The review embargo for The Marvels lifted yesterday and, initially, it looked like more bad news for Marvel Studios. While a 54% score put it above Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Eternals, it became the third MCU movie to be deemed "Rotten" by review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes (and the fourth MCU project overall if you count Secret Invasion).
Well, with even more verdicts shared overnight, the Captain Marvel sequel has jumped to 62% based on 146 reviews.
As a result, it's received a "Fresh" rating...for now, at least. That could quite easily change in the coming days but if the score continues to rise, then it may well soon overtake Thor: Love and Thunder's 63%. Yes, it would still be one of the least favourably reviewed MCU releases, but this could be a big help when it comes to The Marvels' box office prospects this weekend.
Remember, the God of Thunder's last outing ultimately earned $760.9 million at the worldwide box office. The difference there was that it had a huge opening (likely thanks to the goodwill surrounding Thor after Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame), but if word-of-mouth is strong, The Marvels could have serious legs.
We'll see, but a "Fresh" rating will ultimately help Marvel Studios amid talk of "superhero fatigue" and the MCU brand being on the decline. The Marvels may not end up being their biggest hit when all is said and done, anyway, but 2024 is shaping up to be a much better year with Deadpool 3 and Captain America: Brave New World on the horizon.
A critics TV spot for The Marvels has also just been released which you can check out below.
In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.
When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels."
The movie stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon.
The Marvels is set to arrive in theaters on November 10.
