Following the release of a new trailer for The Marvels prior to Comic-Con, excitement for the Captain Marvel sequel has definitely started to build.
The footage repeated much of what we saw in the teaser, but reshoots took place prior to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes which we anticipate leading to some big surprises in the movie (a leaked plot you may have seen several months ago is definitely no longer as accurate as it once was).
Unfortunately, it appears The Marvels could now be facing another release date delay.
It already swapped places with Haunted Mansion - the MCU movie was originally scheduled for July 28 - to allow time for the aforementioned additional photography. Bloomberg, however, reports that Disney is now considering pushing back a number of its 2023 titles in response to the strikes with The Marvels among them.
The main reason for the potential delay isn't because actors are needed to shoot any additional material; instead, it's a result of them being unable to handle their promotional commitments.
Now, you might not think it matters. However, if the strike still isn't over by November (and there's a very good chance it won't be), then you won't see any of the usual junket interviews or social media cast videos meant to build buzz and increase interest among moviegoers. The fact late night talk shows also aren't happening is similarly problematic, so a delay would make sense.
What might keep The Marvels in its planned November slot is the fact marketing has already progressed to a point that makes a delay unlikely. We've already had two trailers and standees are beginning to appear in theaters. To now push the movie to next May, for example, would essentially undo all that work.
Disney and Marvel Studios have yet to comment on this report.
In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.
When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels."
The movie stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon.
The Marvels is currently set to arrive in theaters on November 10.
