Nia DaCosta's The Marvels has found its composer, with Variety reporting that Laura Karpman will score the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel.

Karpman, who is a five-time Emmy winner and the first American female composer to be inducted by the music branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, will take over from Pinar Toprak, who scored the first Captain Marvel movie, becoming the first female composer to work on a Marvel Studios project in the process.

Karpman is no stranger to the MCU, having recently provided the music for the Disney+ What If...? animated series.“I am thrilled to be going on this wild adventure with Nia DaCosta and Carol Danvers and am really looking forward to the collaboration,” she said in a statement.

Brie Larson will reprise the role of Carol Danvers in the sequel, and she'll be joined by Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau.

Plot details for the The Marvels are still under wraps (you can check out a vague logline here), but British actress Zawe Ashton (Fresh Meat, Velvet Buzzsaw) is on board as the main villain, who is rumored to be a gender-swapped take on Kree warrior Ael-Dan. In addition, Samuel L. Jackson recently confirmed that he will appear as Nick Fury.

DaCosta will direct from a script by WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell. The Marvels is set to fly into theaters on February 17, 2023.

Hope this time around the score is more memorable. One of my issues was with the first movie is that it felt quite like a Phase 1 movie, and that includes it's generic score

@bkmeijer - Phase 1 Iron Man and Captain America movies have nice scores.

@Urubrodi - While not as memorable as those two, Thor's score also had its moments. Not to mention GOAT that is The Avengers score.

@Urubrodi @FinnishDude - yeah the Avengers score is unmistakably great, but I feel every the other scores felt kinda generic for their respective genres

@bkmeijer @FinnishDude - I didn't want to mention Avengers as that would be just unfair. But since he was comparing Captain Marvel score to phase 1, those 2 movies, and even Thor, have far better scores. I mentioned those 2 as I can even remember the main themes by head, which doesn't happen often with Marvel.

@Urubrodi - aside from Avengers, there are really any recurring themes I can think of. Maybe the Cap one, that also plays during The Winter Soldier opening and him picking up the hammer.

The least memorable though is probably The Incredible Hulk or The Dark World though out of all scores

I can't even remember much from What If, let alone the score, but I'm looking forward to seeing what she does with Carol's theme, as well as establishing something for Monica (can't remember Monica getting anything particular in WandaVision).

@OmegaDaGrodd -

There's a very interesting piece on YouTube that elaborates on why the first movie's main theme is an homage to Star Trek.

The Captain Marvel part starts at 11:08, but the whole thing is worth a watch; especially its conclusive analysis on Portals from the score of Endgame.

I wonder what the box office will look like on this movie. First one is a movie that did very well, Yet there are many who did not like it. It’ll be interesting to see how it does

As much as I loved the first film it had some terrible songs played out of place in it. The score was solid though. This film and shang chi played the crappiest pop songs but both had strong scores otherwise

@Hulkh8liars - There were about 2 completely unnecessary needle drops during that middle act. I know they wanted to really sell how "90s" it was but it got into overkill in a few parts

@OmegaDaGrodd - yeah. The song the supreme intelligence played and the song that played on the space station fight were both very very out of place.

I hope she puts some touches on Captain Marvel's theme. Wasn't such a fan.

As much as I love the Captain Marvel I have to say that the last two hours of the movie we’re not that good so I hope the sequel is better and I’ll gladly watch it for free

She did a fine job in What If? reworking each character's already established themes from their respective movies, so I think she'll do just fine if she maintains Toprak's previous leitmotiff.
