THE MARVELS Executive Producer Talks "Pairing" Carol Danvers With Valkyrie In MCU Sequel

Tessa Thompson drops by for a brief cameo in The Marvels (not exactly a spoiler, since she's in the trailer), and her scene has led to a lot of discussion online.

Back when Thor: Love and Thunder was in production, reports did the rounds that Taika Waititi's sequel would feature a subplot involving Valkyrie searching for a queen to rule alongside her in New Asgard. This was ultimately dropped from the movie, but one rumor claimed that Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) would emerge as the Asgardian warrior's significant other.

In the Captain Marvel sequel, Carol calls on Valkyrie to help relocate some Skrull refugees, and the scene they share certainly seems to suggest that they are very close. It doesn't outright confirm anything, but there is clearly a strong emotional connection there, and Valkyrie plants a kiss on Carol's cheek as she departs.

Is the scene supposed to imply that these characters are romantically involved?

Executive Producer Mary Livanos was asked about their relationship, and why it was decided to "pair" Carol with Valkrye, during a recent interview with EW.

"Pairing Carol with Valkyrie and having them share the big screen was another bucket list item. Fans really shipped them and their friendship, and as a huge nerd myself, I was dying to see that relationship on the big screen. Nia DaCosta is quite close with Tessa Thompson, so we had to write in a cameo. She's such an empathetic, wonderful character. When we were trying to figure out exactly how to help the Skrulls after the events that take place on Tarnax, we were excited at the idea that Valkyrie could help in this novel way."

It sounds like, in Livanos' mind at least, this is just a strong friendship, but whether the scene is supposed to be setting something up for the pair in a future movie or not, it certainly seems to have been included to get fans talking.

"The Marvels is far from the best Marvel Studios has to offer, but it's difficult not to get swept up in its infectious energy... to a point," we said in our review. "A disjointed third act lets it down, but a game cast and plenty of fun/funny moments elevate it above more lacklustre MCU fare (we're looking at you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumnia)."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

@bobevanz - so which is it. Are they woke or are they too afraid to show gay relationships. Can't have it both ways

@Vigor - There's a reason they push their shit in the West, only to hide it when it comes to other parts of the world. Company's don't give 2 shit about the woke stuff, they think it sells because these weirdo's have a loud voice, that's it. At the end of the day, it's a business so the money will decide.

@Vigor - I agree. They can't have it both ways. Doesn't stop them from trying. The Muslim camp in China, Disney thanked them for allowing them to film Mulan there. Finn was shrunk in the Star Wars poster. And they also put scenes in featuring LGBTQ that can easily be erased in foreign markets.

They save their virtue for the west where most people are accepting, but where it's needed most, they stay silent. Seems like you should ask Disney and not @Bobevans

@Vigor -

When money is at stake, there are no longer homosexual relationships on screen or forced inclusion.

They are adding elements little by little to normalize their pornography

@lvcl @darthomega @hashtagswagg put it this way
I lovelucy show showed Lucy and her husband sleeping in separate beds. Sounds odd right? Well those were the conservative christian values accepted on media at that time. Having a married couple in bed together was pushing the envelope

But perhaps back then if the word "woke" existed and we had social media to spread collective thought, then they would have called a couple shown sleeping in the same bed together as woke. In reality is simply being progressive. And there will always be something progressive and people who fight against it.

In 50 years perhaps they will show robot on human sex. That will be the new woke. While old millenials are going to say the world has gone too far. But we are always pushing boundaries of what's permissible under the purpose of being accepting of all. So that's why when we see gay relationships on TV today, I cringe when people say it's woke. There are literally people who are gay in this world. So are they woke? Are they mutants? Should they form the xmen?
And this is why I know some people aren't ready for when the mcu xmen get revealed.

Sorry for the rant. It's just the woke stuff seems so ancient and I want us as a species to progress and evolve

@HashTagSwagg - if money decided then every company would do it. Foxnews doesn't do it am I right? It's the people at the top, and their beliefs that govern a company and trickle down.

As soon as that dude bought fox back in the day, fox News became all about right wing news spin. So yeah money is a big part of it but its also about what the top pushes

No. Fans didn't ship them. Because they literally didn't interact with each other up until that point and it makes no sense from the source material since they're straight there.

This was a bunch of LGBT activists who heard Valkyrie was gay and decided to pair her with the only other female character they could think of.

@Origame - many fans did.

@LeDiableBlanc - don't know or care of why, but is incorrect to say fans didn't, because many did.

@LeDiableBlanc - but those 2 characters don’t have that many fans to begin with, you probably mean a loud minority, similar to the one that “shipped” Cap and Bucky

A while ago people started making fanart about them,for some reason. Brie and Tessa commented on it on twitter, so that's where they got the idea.
