Comic Review: The Walking Dead #99

Something To Fear continues and just before the much anticipated 100th issue of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman brings an excellent and dramatic issue to the table following the death of a beloved character. You can read my full thoughts after the jump.

The Walking Dead #99 is one of those issues where they are hyping everything up before the penultimate 100th issue which is expected to be the best selling comic this year so far, so what exactly did 99 give us?

In this issue the intensity and action is starting to cool off after Abraham’s death in the last issue so maybe slowing things down wasn’t such a bad decision. No one wants to be fighting off zombies or trying to defend themselves from The Saviors after one of the best members passes away tragically (At least it wasn’t an arrow in the knee!). This issue features some very interesting plot twists, and there was a lot that happens in this book dramatic wise so I struggled to write something without spoiling any of the good parts.

The budding relationship between Andrea and Rick is starting to blossom as the two spend time with each other but I somewhat disapprove of this relationship mainly because in the beginning of the series it was being built up as if Lori was Rick’s lifeline and he wouldn’t give her up for anything but now that she is gone it seems as Rick is trying to fill that gap in his heart that Lori left even after the psychological episode he had when he “talked” to “Lori” on the old telephone. Also, in the preview for 99 we saw Carl spot Rick and Andrea hugging and walk away after seeing this, almost like he didn’t want to interrupt them so maybe Carl approves of having Andrea become the mother figure in his life.

Although we don’t get much of a Negan or Zombie presence or even a tease at Lucille, this book is a good read and shouldn’t be shunned to the side of your pull list if you are waiting for 100. In fact, at the end you will get a tease to what’s to come in Issue 100, and it may not be something positive. I give this book a solid 7.5/10. What do you give it?
