COMICS: Marvel Announced Avengers 1959 By Howard Chaykin!

This October will see the release of Avengers 1959, a five issue limited series spinning out of the recent events in New Avengers featuring a very different team of heroes than those we're used to...

The most recent arc in writer Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers ("Infinity") included flashbacks by Howard Chaykin of the President tasking war hero Nick Fury with the "Avengers Initiative." This saw him putting together a team consisting of characters like Kraven the Hunter and Sabretooth for covert missions, the first of which was taking down a secret Nazi group who had created their own twisted version of Captain America. Later this year, Chaykin will return to 1959 with a series further exploring the teams exploits. To read the full report and interview, head on over to Comic Book Resources by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

On The Different Portrayal Of Nick Fury In The Series:

"What it is about Fury that I like, is that he really is a guy who is old enough to have genuinely experienced the horror of the Second World War and young enough to still be active and vital at this point. And for me it wasn't just because he looked like him, but my backstory in my head for Fury, because of where he was born and raised, is that in another universe he would have been Burt Lancaster. The story that Brian and I told took place before Fury became a super spy. In that story, and in this one as well, you're seeing Nick Fury stepping up to the plate to become the guy we know he's going to become."

On The Avengers And The 1950's Setting:

"They're not after the Red Skull this time. Basically they're up against that nascent network of post-World War II fascist villains that's slowly coming together. There's also a third party, which I will not go into, that is instrumental in stirring up a storm between our heroes and those villains. That sort of complicates things radically. I'm having an enormous amount of fun with the setting. One of the things is no cell phones and no super sonic jets. The technology that's featured in this story is real technology, for the most part, with some obvious adjustments. We're going to take a look at New York in the 1950s, and we're going to visit Madripoor and some of the great kingdoms of Marvel history."

On Who We Might See Turn Up During The Series:

"We'll see other characters from that period show up in cameos and guest spots, which I will not talk about. But expect some fun and recognizable faces."

No thanks. They were decent for the flashback, I have no desire to read a series about them. I'm also not a fan of the art style.

I like it. So is this the equivalent of X-Men: First Class?

@Bigbmh I agree about the artwork. stories are one thing but what really pulls me in is the artwork. there is artwork that kind of aims at adults fans or kid fans. this seems very kiddy type to me artwork so no thanks.

Howard Chaykin's art ruins this for me, just my own humble opinion though.

What kind of retcon nonsense is this? The original Avengers had nothing to do with SHIELD. SHIELD wasn't even mentioned in the Marvel Universe until several years later.

I don't mind the idea of a group of older characters being used for some early 'untold' adventures, but don't tie it in to the Avengers. Bendis is showing that he is out of ideas for this team.

Art is very average at best also.

I love this art actually. Might check this out..love Sabertooth and Fury, can kinda take or leave the others but still..

Honestly, f*#@ Bendis and his efforts to make the title "Avenger" completely meaningless by applying it to everyone in the Marvel Universe.

I think plasticman stated it correct, this seems to be equal to XMEN first class. Since everybody dogged Fox for it let's see how many people jump on Marvel!

This Chaykin art is really very ugly. Check out the difference of Namorita's eyes and the perspective fail on Kraven's sniper (he would be aiming high and shooting low, there's no way that scope/barrel persp. difference could exist).

Besides looks like Sabretooth is taking a crap, or playing air guitar (Metallica song, probably).

"I'll pass. Not a fan of the art."

My thoughts exactly. I liked the premise of it OK in New Avengers, but I can't get past the art. Get someone else to draw it and they'll have a hit.

They're making an Avengers team before the original avengers? Lame.

And is that... Kraven?

What was Kraven doing around then? He was a Spider-man enemy.

Yeah Chaykins art is not my thing.

Something like this needs someone like Sean Gordon Murphy or Mitch Breitweiser

Howard Chaykin used to love comics. His American Flagg series was brilliant, his take on The Shadow was excellent. But a long time ago, at a comic con in London, he revealed that he'd just as much like to draw table mats of the same characters. As long as he gets paid. It was obvious that his heart was no longer in it. He also has an ego the size of a planet. He started off the on-stage Con interview, by asking the interviewer 'What right he felt he had to share the same stage as him?'. And the pr*ck was serious! Most of the audience booed him or walked out. I sold my Flagg collection after that. Life is too short for other people's ego's.

Interesting. Maybe they will finally explain how Nick Fury lost his eye, then his hair, then became a black man

Great. Now they are retconning the Avegers so that the original line-up of Hulk, Thor, Iron-man, Ant-Man and the Wasp are not the original line-up any more. Now it's Nick Fury and his group of spies. Effing Great.

It was a cheesy little side story in a recent Avengers title and surely not worthy of retconning the groups origins or even a mini series for that matter.
