COMICS: Today's CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS #1 Features A Shocking Twist Marvel Knows You'll Hate

"We knew it would be like slapping people in the face," says Marvel Editor Tom Brevoort, clearly unaware how fans want to feel when reading comics. Needless to say, Cap's new status quo will disgust you...

These days, it seems like Marvel's speciality is character assassinations, and fans of Captain America are sure to recoil at the reveal that Steve Rogers has secretly been an agent of HYDRA since childhood. In fact, he even murders Jack Flag before declaring his allegience to the terrorist organisation in Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, and while you may think we're dealing with an imposter, LMD, or clone, it's been confirmed by both Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort and writer Nick Specer that this is the real Steve and his new status quo moving forward. Why though would they do this to such a beloved character? Well, as with most things Marvel these days, it seems to be for the shock factor.

"His mission is to further the goals and beliefs of Hydra," explained Brevoort. "If that involves taking down the Marvel universe, sure. (But) it may not be as simple as that. It’s not like he’s exchanged his white hat for a black hat — it’s a green hat. We knew it would be like slapping people in the face. The idea of Captain America means something very primal and very strong to the people of this nation, and they have a very visceral reaction when you get to something like that. You want people to feel and react to your story. So far, so good." Needless to say, revealing that Cap has always been an undercover agent for HYDRA is a baffling move, and one which is sure to alienate a lot of fans. Still, in a Marvel Universe with no Fantastic Four, a dead Cyclops, and Peter Parker now Tony Stark-lite, perhaps this revalation shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. What do you guys think of this big twist?

If you think this is "OMFG WORST THING EVAARR!!!!1!!" you're quite the forgetful eejit. This is just part of another storyline with a shocking beginning to get people interested.

It's the EXACT same as Superior Spider-Man. It's obviously not a long lasting thing and they're not literally making Cap Hydra so just....ugh, relax. Be grand. Let's see if the story is any good.

All will be fine in a year or two anyway if you hate it.

@TheSonicScrew - Haha, Superior Spider-man was my first thought as well. They're obviously going to stick by it like "This is just how it is now. Deal with it." but it'll be undone. Still annoying though. Stop trying to spike sales with stunts and events and just let writers tell good, character driven stories.

@TheSonicScrew - I agree but I refuse to buy comics when they pull this crap. Didn't read any superior Spider-Man, didn't read any captain falcon, won't be reading this.

Marvel Comics cannot entertain. They just got done with the old Cap stunt & move directly into another. The characters created by great artists in the hands of inferior morons.

People need to burn their cash if they want to waste it but they shouldn't pay Marvel to produce this garbage.

It's Disney, obamas propaganda machine for tomorrow's youth. One more step to tear down america. Brevoort and specer obviously have nooo idea what they are doing. Time for some of you clowns to step up, post some stories on fan fiction and take over the reigns at marvel.

@LEOSTRATOR - it's real simple. Disney owns marvel and Disney is part of MSM. And we all know who pulls those strings.

@LEOSTRATOR - LEOSTRATOR - well for starters, im totally against the idea that little Steve Rogers has been a secret hydra experiment period. Ive read EVERY issue up to dimension z and i gave up when they rolled out that pos. In the historical cannon it makes no sense whatsoever. If it were true then the nazi would have won the war. Secondly, the article talks about recent character assainations and you guys are going "how can this be? What are they thinking? Why would they do this?" I was just offering up a valid opinion based on the history and track record of Disney. I'm not saying it's the actual reason, just a plausible reality based on Disney's history of political correctness. Camel, back in the 80s, targeted teenage smoking the whole Joe Cool campaign so stuff like this isn't new to me. That's why when I first read about it, Propaganda was the first word that popped into my head. When Disney first bought marvel, people were afraid stuff like this might happen, especially with the movies and now it seems it may have. Although, My bet is that they will spin this into one of the skulls cloned bodies of cap. Everyone seems to have forgotten that he and arnim have done that.
