This isn't the first time Hawkeye scribe Matt Fraction has raised money for chariity as he has mixed his works with social activism before. For instance, he donated his Hawkeye #7 royalties to Hurricane Sandy relief. He has also been donating his commision on Hawkeye apparel to the Futures Without Violence charity. Though this time it isn't because of one his works, but is in response to Fifty Shades Of Grey.

The upcoming film adaptation of the international best-selling romance novel  as many of you may know has a controversial portrayal of sexual violence. Fraction recently spoke out on his blog to express his feelings on how the film and novel portrays sex and violence.

So there’s a movie out this weekend based on books that romanticize, fetishize, glamorize and normalize abusive relationships. It will make 85 million dollars at the box office and move hundreds of millions of dollars of candy, soda, and cash-in branded merch.

And while sex is great and finding someone into all the stuff you’re into is great, sex is not consent to violence, a relationship is not permission to abuse, and there are thousands of women and children who have to deal with that fundamental and erroneous misconstruing of truth and wild misinterpretation of love every day.

It is because of his feelings on Fifty Shades Of Grey that Fraction has started the Fifty Shades of Futures Without Violence campaign. As part of this campaign Matt Fraction will not only continue to donate his commision from Hawkeye merchandise to charity but will also match his donation. The donations will once again go to the Futures Without Violence campaign which you can learn more about here. If you are interested in contributing hit the source below.

Such a poor representation of the BDSM community. Really makes me sick.

Found this to be interesting, somewhat related, and kind of ironic

I like Matt Fraction and if I am not mistaken he gave half his earnings for one of his Hawkeye issues to a hurricane relief fund. The guys heart is in the right place but the movie should not be the precursor to his current endeavor. I have not read much into the book but from my understanding it's BDSM but from a male. And if they are both consenting to the act then there is not much room for foul play.

No violence against women.

I think his objection is less to the BDSM, but more to their relationship as a whole. I've never read the book or seen the movie, but, from what I understand, the relationship in the book is EMOTIONALLY abusive. I'm under the impression that the man is controlling and emotionally dominant, and the book normalizes and glorifies the objectification and domination of women (ironic, considering the author is female). If two people are into bondage and violent sex, and they're consenting, go for it. But women are capable and independent, not objects.

I think he's using the movie's popularity to promote his cause more than anything here....

Btw, I heard the movie is rated a 3 or something on IMDB, ha

This is incredibly ironic, since the fellow is working in an industry that has always sexually objectified women and glorified and thrived on wanton violence.

@MexicanSuperman from what I garhered from a friend of my sister who read it, the entire relationship is just all kinds of messed up. Grey is like he is because his mothers friend Elena took his Virginity and than introduced him to BDSM for the next 6 years, until Elena's husband beat the shit out of her when he found out. Later on in the book, he confessed that BDSM is all he knew how to do and never did normal sex, he would just unleash his emotions out on the girls he signed contracts to through BDSM. Later, when the female lead (whatever her name is) gets involved, he loves her. Blah blah blah, they do it, at certain points during the story she'll say not to do this or that, like "did you like it when I hit you?" "No, please don't hit me again" "I'll hit you as much as I please".

So yeah, two emotionally unstable, not quite rape but sexually abused BDSM people that are getting a major motion pictures and millions of dollars.

See the problem?

@MexicanSuperman

My sister was part of an abusive relationship, and going back to your abuser is, unfortunately, very common for victims. It's how some people cope, and is a form of PTSD. Abuse needs to be shown as something she can stand up to, and walk away from; the only way we can help victims is showing them that finding a way out is possible. Showing that it's normal, positive, and preferable, to keep going back to your abuser exacerbates the problem.

Supposedly there was a rape scene in the book. Most likely what he's advocating against.
