My most favorite graphic novel of all time-Origin

My most favorite graphic novel of all time-Origin

Just a review and praise of my most beloved comic story throughout my years of comic book collecting and reading.

Editorial Opinion

If anyone has read the book Origin, than many will understand where i come from on this review. Now, just to get things straight, I am not a "Marvelite," nor a "Nolanite" as they are called. I simply love comic books and any that are good.People fighting over this kind of media is pathetic and absolutely ridiculous when you could just enjoy the damn book, movie, game, etc., and let anyone and everyone else have their own damn opinions about things.

Anyway, back to the focus point of my editorial. At the time of purchasing Origin, I had no idea what I was in for. It was truly a ride. At that point of buying, I was really big on anything that had to do with Wolverine, and was simply out collecting. Later that night I opened up the book to read it and found myself hooked within the first three pages of book #1, and couldn't stop reading. I was thinking that there was no way this would outdo my Punisher Graphic by Ennis, but it DID.

To sum the whole thing up, it was the origin story of Marvel's main money-maker, Wolverine, and it was damn near the best anything I have ever read. For such a maniacal powerhouse of a character, he sure has a deep past. It goes from his years of childhood in a rich, wealthy, and comfortable family as James Howlett, all the way to the end as Logan, champion Canadian ring-fighter who disappears into the woods to carry on with his life.

Now for anyone that has not read this, I will not ruin the story, but I will say that the most emotional, deepest point of the story to me is where Dog, childhood friend and future nemesis of James, receives a toy train from James' father on Christmas, then goes home to an abusive father, jealous of James' father. Dog gets beaten by his father, and his toy train is destroyed. When I read that part, I was surprised at how much i could feel for a fictional character.

This book outdid any comic or graphic novel I have ever read and the only one that has ever come close was probably Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears by Garth Ennis and Clayton Crain.(I might do a review on that one next.) Anyway, for any that read this, thank you for your time and I hope you enjoyed this article. If anyone has a different favorite, I would be interested in knowing. Please list your favorite in the comments section, and be respectful. Nobody likes little brats to start in. Happy posting!

I gotta say i stumbled on the cbm site a few weeks ago and man i feel like i'm home! This is a great site and even if there's some bickering amongst us well all at least have a few things in common: we love comic books, movies and good stories regardless if they're accompanied by graphics or not.

I've HEard good things about Silver Surfer Requiem, and yes The Watchmen is one of the all time greats, another graphic novel i enjoyed was The Death of Captain Marvel, it's a downer but also a good story.

@ TPthunder

silver surfer requiem could be the best silver surfer story i have ever read, could make even the coldest of hearts melt.

the death of captain marvel was marvel's first graphic novel.

it was shocking killing off a popular character like captain marvel with cancer.

so far the only original graphic novel that I really liked was ..... waaaaiiiittteee foooorrr iiiiittttt,,,,,
Jonah Hex "No Way Back."
most graphic novels are just a collection of story lines in comic issues.... with the exception of "The watchmen." other than that me, personally arn't to impressed with the lot allthough Planet Hulk was a good story

@ wesleygibson

I liked this story a lot too. It was a wolverine comic that actually had emotion and feeling in it. Not just wolverine yelling and running headfirst into everything.

You may want to check out Wolverine: The End. Its basically a direct sequel to Origin. Where Origin is the beginning of Wolvie's story, The End is the last story, and his death. The End deals with a LOT of things revealed in Origin. I highly recommend it. I'll admit, it isn't as good as Origin, but like i said, it has a LOT to do with Origin. :)

oh, and thank you for realizing that Dog is not Sabretooth. you have no idea how many times i've had to disprove people that thought that. ugh...

@Marvel72 yeah The Death of Captain Marvel was shocking and to my knowledge he is one of the few heroes that hasn't been brought back. Speaking of which, I liked Barry Allen and his death (going out like a true hero) and his nephew Wally taking over the mantle was probably the best death/transition in comics and i'm not even a die hard dc fan but at that time Flash featuring Wally West was one of the few DC title i'd pick up at the time, him and Swamp thing.
