The decision to kill off Ultimate Peter Parker was met with a mixed reactions from fans, as was his replacement; the half-black, half-Hispanic Miles Morales. Now the new Ultimate Spider-Man comic is getting rave reviews and has made converts of quite a few fans but there are still those unwilling to accept the change. CBR have posted a very interesting article on the new Ultimate Universe and in it Marvel Editor In Chief Axel Alonso speaks about the decisions made regarding ol Peter Parker..

"We didn't kill Peter Parker easily, we realised that 'Death of Spider-Man' would complete Peter's arc. I think it's beautiful now that ten years later we have a new launch and a new guy on his own journey of self discovery.

"Peter Parker has been around for decades and he's got fans who are all colours. At the end of the day, Miles also transcends race, and that's all I'll have to say about it."

USM's first issues with Miles have been cool. I'm sure somepeople hate it for different reasons, but I can see the kid taking the mantle.

I don't know why they made such a big deal about miles being black, wasn't Spidey 2099 Puerto-Rican or something?

But Peter Parker was half the fun! People dont just buy Spider-Man comics for just Spider-Man. I loved the parallel story lines of both Peter Parker AND Spider-Man and how they mixed. Buy killing Peter Parker, thats like killing off half the series. And no one can replace him.

Well, they really didn't try to replace him. Morales is a very different character. I think its working so far..although I prob wont keep reading but thats only cos I'm more into the standard MU comics at the mo.

How does Miles Morales "transcend race" exactly? Is he a robot that has no race? To say he transcends race is kind of a racists statement.

I appreciate the complete circle of Peter's journey and that coming to a close, but ultimately it's Spider-Man without Peter Parker...that's a tough thing to swallow (that's what she said). Ultimate Spider-Man is one of my favorite comic books of all time. Its just weird to see such a drastic change.

Am I the only one that thinks he's not dead?? He was going through all this SHEILD training right before he died from various members of the Ultimates. Pretty much every one of his rouges gallery figured out his secret identity. Nick Fury could have easily put him in some secret Shield hospital and told the world he was dead. That way he could be properly trained and there would be no more threat of a villain killing his friends and family. He will make his return as a member of the Ultimates within the next two years

Race is Always an issue with Racist Hateful People.

That was the focus more so than Peter Parker dying.

If he was replaced by another White Guy the outcry from Haters would be as big.

However it probably would be as big of a deal just the same.

This was a smart tactic to shake up the comic world.

@DeadGuyWalking...I also think they could always bring Peter Back. I mean they brought the Torch and Captain America back.

I think this is a smart way of introducing a New Character and then in the future bring back Peter and having a Spiderman Team Up.

There is already a Scarlet Spiderman. Miles is just a cool additional Spiderman IMO.

I think Peter will be back down the line.
Its a cool setup.

@DeadGuy, Nick seemed pretty genuine when he was talking to Mary Jane in Ultimate Fallout about Peter's death. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them to write that story though.

I've read the new USM #1 (subscription takes a long time to arrive in the mail) and it's looking like it'll be pretty good. Even with Peter dead, I feel it's a shame to let go of some of the interesting stories of USM. There was still more thy could do with Mary Jane, Gwen, and Aunt May, but thankfully we can follow Johnny, Kitty, and Bobby.

lmao so his reasoning is that they made Spiderman a new black kid just so he can brag about it?

Well thought out Marvel, dimwits

What is Bendis's problem? I mean I don't have anything against him. Much respect for the guy. It's just that Peter's story was becoming so interesting and to just kill him off is a slap in the face to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those racist Republican conservatives (I'm a Democrat), but I just don't see the point in killing off a interesting character for a character who was made just for the purpose of luring in more readers just because he's a "black Spider-Man".

They never take Peter anywhere anyway and they know it. I mean they ran out of ideas to the point to where they have two Spiderman games that both include time travel with two of the same characters and so desperate for a story that the figured "hey, let's give everyone in new york city spider powers!". Not to mention the new spiderman movie that is once again, retelling the boring high school story and possibly get the high school beginnings again in the new spiderman animated series. This new "Spiderman" is the best thing that could have possibly happened, that is until they decide to actuall do something worth caring about with Peter. They should give him more Spider powers.

what he is saying is they cant come up with ideas on there own anymore. They have to take other peoples ideas and change them slightly and try to sell it as new. I hate marvel

I miss Ultimate Peter Parker. He was the best thing about the Ultimate universe.

And @AutobotCommander84 dude you do realize the Republicans were the ones who voted for equal rights for African Americans during the 60's right? While most of the Democrats didn't? And that Lincoln was a Republican who was against slavery? And I happen to be a conservative and I have many black friends and friends of other races too. And I am not a racist sooo.... I don't know where you are coming from. Unless you had a bad experience with a Republican conservative, then I understand. Anyway, I'm not trying to get into a silly political argument here, but I found your comment misleading and confusing because I don't consider myself to be racist in any way. No argument here. Just confusion.

wbrowning79-Relax Peter Parker is still alive...and well. He lives OUTSIDE the Ultimate Universe. I hope those fighting and fuming over this issue take your own lives so seriously instead of a comic book. :-)

I think Marvel is doing a great job so far with this new Spider-Man. It will be interesting to see where Marvel takes his story.

@FriendlyNeighborhoodSpidey I don't believe the crap that's fed to us in the textbooks about the whole "Lincoln wanted to stop slavery for the good of mankind" shtick. If he really wanted to help out black people, he would've given them equal rights. And my main problem with conservatives is that some don't give a flying [frick] about LGBT rights just because of their religious upbringing (I'm talking to you Chuck Norris).
