Two Comic-Book/Graphic Novel Adaptations That Deserve Extended Cuts

Two Comic-Book/Graphic Novel Adaptations That Deserve Extended Cuts

These are two movies with plenty of redeeming qualities that many people overlook, but an extended cut for both films may allow for a chance to clean the slate a little bit and to turn these good films into great films once and for all (as they should have been from the get-go).

THE CROW: CITY OF ANGELS

Of the two movies on here, this is the one that I want to see get an extended cut the most. While the film itself was heavily flawed throughout, this was only because the studio wanted to make it "more like the original" by cutting it's original two hour plus runtime into a dismal hour and a half. The film had a tacked on "happy ending" thanks to this decision as well, not unlike Blade Runner's theatrical release, and it unfortunately undermines the sense of tragedy that the filmmakers were intending to portray. The script was written by David S. Goyer, and from my memory of watching the PPV version, which restored most of the original cut's footage, it seems that he had assembled a pretty solid script that explored more ideas around The Crow, Ashe Corvin in the film, as a tragic character. For example, unlike the happy ending that was inserted at the last minute, the original ending depicted a much more devastating finale that actually denies Ashe of his own death, which means that he'll forever be stuck as The Crow because of his own choice to stay and fight for Sarah, but, just like in the original ending, she dies, and Ashe is left with nothing in return. It would have been a great ending, and a better lead-in to future sequels (or just the perfect ending they were looking for).

SPIDER-MAN 3

The hate this film gets is baffling, but it's obviously because of the fact that there's just a lot missing from it. From the Comic-Con trailer that was leaked years ago, there were a ton of interesting moments that could have added more to the film, like when Peter is staring at himself in the mirror and then, out of nowhere, that Venom looking thing (from above) pops up, also there's a shot of Sandman intimidating a doctor and there's a very brief shot of what appears to be Venom trying to ruin Spidey's face with his webbing. Personally, I'm fine with the way the film is, but there are a lot of things about it that could be trimmed up a bit, and there are loads of stuff left on the cutting room floor that could make for an even better movie than they had originally released. They even shot an alternate scene of Eddie convincing Sandman to join him in fighting Spider-Man and, judging from the set pictures of the scene (found in the link below), it would have been a much better, more coherent scene to have in there than when Venom (quite literally) randomly finds Sandman. Also, I want a final swing.

One of my favourite things from The Crow: City of Angels is just the whole look of it. I love the way that it's shot, it looks amazing. Based solely on the visuals, I would give this film a 3 out of 5 at least. If it had the original ending and some of the extra additions as well (like Judah's backstory), it would most definitely be my favourite Crow movie.

You know... as much as I love TASM and how there's a new series, I would've liked it if there were more films in the Raimi series. Let's face it, Spider-Man 3 is the reason they rebooted. If some of the plot-points in the film were either left out or saved for another film, it could've been much better. Maybe change a couple costume designs (New Goblin?). Part of me wanted Spider-Man 3 to be better, and to have some of those iconic moments we expect from a Spider-Man film. It was good, just not as good as it could've been. I expected more from it. But I do love the new series and I'm very much looking forward to The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The Amazing Spider-Man is my least favourite Spider-Man film, but I do agree with you in that I'm excited to see this new trilogy unfold as well. The new film looks to have more than a few villains in the mix (including Electro, Rhino, possibly Mysterio, and hopefully Green Goblin by the ending) and it already has me excited by that prospect alone.

I only ever watched the first crow as the buzz about the sequels was so bad... maybe I should take a look.

Spiderman 3... I kno where your going with this and its down to Raimi being a great director and even his poor/average output still delivers a high enough level of balanced narrative which a lot of directors struggle to provide.

If Raimi hadn't of been bullied into using Venom and had been able to make his own film, we would probably be looking forward to Spiderman 5 this summer (with a Sinister 6 for Spiderman 6 in a couple of years.

Spider-Man 3 is good and enjoyable for what it was. People give it a bad rep because it couldn't meet the expectations the first two gave us and a lack of development for Eddie Brock/Venom. People would still be boohooing about Venom even if they left those scenes in because he didn't get as much screen time. Honestly, despite what Raimi thinks of Venom, the third movie should've strictly been New Goblin and Venom. Also, the idea of Vulture for Spider-Man 4 was dumb. They could've easily made a story in a fourth with The Lizard that could then lead into a fifth with Carnage. I came up with that like two seconds after the third one was over. That extended mirror scene was interesting in the trailer and I wish they would've kept it in cause I think it would've made it better. Not by much but, better.

Now, The Amazing Spider-Man being the reboot. Yes, it does have its flaws. The main two being that it retreaded the origin and it purposely left an opening for a sequel instead of it being something like from Spider-Man 1 or 2. The origin was only a flaw because it held the movie back a little but, it also enhanced it at the same time. Shit, even Raimi liked The Amazing Spider-Man. I know it's all about preference. I personally love all the movies but, The Amazing Spider-Man is the definite favorite of mine. Saying it's Spider-Man for the Twilight crowd is invalid. People just look for ways to rip on it. Yes, the CGI for The Lizard could've been better at times. But, it was more interesting and entertaining to see Doctor Connors/The Lizard than it was Sandman, New Goblin and Doc Ock (I'm going to catch hell for the last one). But, that's just me. Green Goblin, The Lizard, Venom. That's how my list goes for the most interesting and entertaining villains in the Spider-Man film franchise. I would've preferred Mysterio over Rhino in TASM 2 although as characters, they both suck ass. But, because they have Electro and Rhino for TASM 2 villains, Rhino is going to need a serious character change and Electro already has one that makes him already sound interesting unlike his comicbook counter part and already sounding better written than his comicbook counter part. I'm hoping the second one delivers but, I don't want to see Goblin nor Gwen's death until Spider-Man 3. I honestly don't think it'll be as good as TASM but, can't know until it comes out next may.

I wish they would release a new cut of SM3, where emo-dance is cut off and instead that time is used for new Venom scene. Then I would be happy. Give us Spiderman 3.2!

The Crow: Salvation was one of those movies that I thought I hated, because I remember watching it when I was young and it didn't really click with me at that age, but then I watched it again after people told that they thought it was better than City Of Angels, and surely enough, it turned out to be a pretty solid movie and it was just a wee bit better than City Of Angels (because the story's more straight-forward, and the editing wasn't obviously screwed up at the last minute). My favourite part was the twist that the villain pulls near the end, because it actually works, as even The Crow starts to believe his lies.

Although I like Salvation more, I have more respect for what they were trying to do with City Of Angels, and I can watch it more because it's easy for me to picture the parts that are missing because I've done everything from reading the original script all the way through, peering at some of the comics that were released, and, what helped the most, was watching a fan-made re-edit of the film online.

Check out the re-edited version here if you want, it'll give you a whole new perspective on how great the film COULD have been if it wasn't tampered with so badly.
