The DC Extended Universe Is No More; Warner Bros. Discovery Finally Gives It An Official Name

Following the news that James Gunn will head up the newly minted DC Studios, it's been confirmed that the DC Extended Universe is dead and gone. Now, it has a new name, and you can find that right here...

Did you know that the "DC Extended Universe" isn't the official name for the world that movies like Zack Snyder's Justice League, Aquaman, and Peacemaker take place in?

In reality, "DCEU" was first used in an Entertainment Weekly article from 2015 by writer Keith Staskiewicz. He's since revealed that he "straight-up made it up as a joke" because it "seemed like the kind of thing [Warner Bros. would] call it." Despite that, we've all been using the name since, and even Dwayne Johnson has been talking about the "DCEU" while hyping Black Adam.

Now, though, the DCEU has a new, official name.

In the wake of the news that The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and DC Films producer Peter Safran will take charge of DC Studios for at least the next four years, it's been confirmed that this shared world will now be called The DCU (DC Universe).

DC Studios? DCU? That sounds familiar, right?

Regardless, the memo obtained by The Wrap confirms that this is the new name, with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav saying, "For over 60 years, these and other DC characters have captivated and inspired generations of fans around the world, and as stewards of the iconic franchise, we feel a real responsibility to preserve and expand the DCU for the enjoyment of future generations."

It's an exciting time to be a DC fan, as this definitely feels like a turning point for the troubled franchise. While Gunn will still promote Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 next year, he'll do so as the DC Studios boss. Due to his exclusive deal with Warner Bros., however, he won't be returning to the MCU at all during that four-year period.

How do you feel about this "DCU" branding? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

@abd00bie - the fact that this franchise is in its 9th year, and it is finally getting an official name now, just shows how much a trainwreck they've been in management-wise this whole time. The creatives and iconic characters have been (barely) saving them 😂

I mean, it was never officially called the DCEU by WB anyway, and call it whatever you want, the shared universe that Snyder kickstarted isn't dead until they recast Cavill, Gadot, Momoa, Miller, and the others.
