While Disney's live-action Mulan film has had more than a few bumps along the road, including the recent revelation that fan-favourite character and apparent bisexual icon Li Shang won't be appearing in the adaptation, if a recent report from Pursue News is to be believed fans still have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming film.

Sources close to the site have revealed that the film which is to be helmed by The Zookeeper's Wife director Niki Caro, will have a budget of $290 million dollars. This will make Caro the third woman to direct a movie budgeted at over $100 million after Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins and A Wrinkle In Time director Ava DuVernay.

According to the report, the budget is to accommodate the size and quality of the film's production design, with the sets being described as "massive" and on "an unprecedented scale". The report also reveals that the team responsible for the sets on last year's Thor: Ragnarok will be working on the film.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have rewritten the film which will see Liu Yifei as the titular character, with a supporting cast that includes Donnie Yen, Jet Li, and Gong Li.

Mulan is scheduled for release on 27th March 2020.

Well this movie is going to make all the money in the world so I can totally believe they want to do it up right and aren’t afraid of a huge budget.

Now that's a budget! Damn. Mulan is one of the better animated Disney films, so hopefully the remake is faithful and better than the ones we've seen so far.

IMO, The Jungle Book has been the only good one

Alice in Wonderland (2010) - Meh
Maleficent (2014) - Mediocre
Cinderella (2015) - Mediocre
The Jungle Book (2016) - Pretty Good
Beauty & the Beast (2016) - Just Good

In production, still to be released:

Christopher Robin - 8/3/2018
Mary Poppins Returns - 12/25/2018
Dumbo - 3/29/2019
Aladdin - 5/24/2019
The Lion King - 7/19/2019
Mulan - 3/27/2020

Announced, but still in early stages of production (if at all):

The Jungle Book Sequel - No release date
The Sword in the Stone - No release date
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs - No release date
Prince Charming (Snow White) - No release date
Cruella (101 Dalmatians) - No release date (Emma Stone attached to star)
Peter Pan - No release date
"Tink" (Tinkerbell film) - No release date (Reese Witherspoon attached to star)
Pinocchio - No release date
Little Mermaid - No release date (Lin-Manuel Miranda writing)
Lady & the Tramp - No release date
James and the Giant Peach - No release date
Chip n' Dale - No release date
Chernabog (from Fantasia) - No release date

Now that's a lot of films.

@L0RDbuckethead - Hot Damn!! I’m loving most of the “early stages of production” list.

Chip n’ Dale. Now that takes me WAY back. And a live adaption of Pinocchio would be amazing😊

@L0RDbuckethead - That almost looks to be even bigger than the amount of DC Films in development.

I don't know how. I don't know what role she'd play, or if she could be as badass as she is in "Agents of SHIELD" without pulling the spotlight from Liu Yifeng, but it would be so awesome to see the original Mulan, Ming Na Wen in this.

@SisterSunday52 - She could be Mulan's mom. Unless they want a much older looking actress to play her mother (yes I know Ming Na Wen is 54 but damn does she not look it).

Well considering China's box office alone is going to double that budget it's not much of a financial risk

@zeon00 - It could have come from that meme where it said 'That moment you realize Shang is gay for half the movie'
