In the midst of
Solo: A Star Wars Story bombing and
Rosanne being canceled, Disney finally has a bit of good news to share. Production on
Maleficent 2 has officially begun.
Disney announced the start of production via the film’s social media channels. The company also confirmed that Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are both reprising their roles as Maleficent and Aurora, respectively.
Michelle Pfeiffer has also officially signed on to the movie as Queen Ingrith.
Maleficent 2 is a sequel to 2014's live-action film loosely inspired by Charles Perrault's original fairy tale and Walt Disney's 1959 animated film
Sleeping Beauty. As the original film’s title suggests, the movie is told from the perspective of the antagonist; however, the retelling painted Maleficent in a much different light, revealing her untold story. It was a clever re-imagining that ultimately raked in over $750 million at the worldwide box office. More importantly, it jump-started a Disney trend of live-action retellings of popular fairy tale stories.
Maleficent 2 picks up several years after the original as Maleficent and Aurora
“form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”
In addition to those three stars, the cast also includes Harris Dickinson as Prince Phillip (Aurora’s love interest in the original animated
Sleeping Beauty),
Chiwetel Ejiofor,
Ed Skrein, and Robert Lindsay. Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville are also returning.
Maleficent 2 is being helmed by
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales co-director Joachim Rønning, with a script by Linda Woolverton, Micah Fitzerman-Blue, and Noah Harpster. There is currently no release date.
