Mark Romanek's Dark Vision Leads To His Exit From Disney's CINDERELLA Remake

It seemed as if production on the new Cinderella from Disney was going well, with a star in the form of Cate Blanchett and One Hour Photo's Mark Romanek attached to direct.

Deadline reports that director Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go) and Disney have parted ways on the remake of Cinderella. Cate Blanchett is attached to star, and while the studio already has a script from Chris Weitz and Aleen Brosh McKenna, it turns out that Romanek's vision is just to dark for the House of Mouse (this isn't the first time this has happened; he also dropped out of The Wolfman due to similar creative issues). The site were able to get the following statement from the studio. "The Walt Disney Studios and Mark Romanek have parted ways on Disney’s Cinderella project. We are committed to moving the project forward and have begun the search for a new director. The team here at Disney respects Mark as both a director and a friend, and we hope to find something to work on together in the future." Stay tuned for further details!

I agree that a Disney movie needs to walk a fine line between being too dark in tone or subject matter. I would not want to see a Disney version of Cinderella that is overly dark or disturbing. However, have you ever read the Grimm's version of Cinderella? Towards the end it gets absolutely horrifying. Definitely not bedtime story material. Check it out...it's grotesque.

Because remaking a known property but putting a dark spin on it, hasn't been done a thousand times before over the last 5-6 years (snow white and the huntsman anyone?). One thing i hope will happen in the wake of the avengers, is hollywood maybe lightening things up a bit. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with a dark tone if it compliments the nature of the story and/or the characters. But over the last few years after the success of the dark knight, hollywood have had a hard on for this whole "lets make it dark and gritty" mentality. I have a little sister who is only 8, and i don't want to take her to a movie that might scare her or at least make her uncomfortable. Kudos to disney for not being moron's and knowing the demographic that will be most likely to watch it.

The Grimm brothers version, "Aschenputtel," was very dark, but this "dark" style movie thing is pissin' me off.

I don't think people realize how twisted, dark and just plain effed up the old fairy tales were, BEFORE Disney and others like them sanitized the originals. They didn't have happy endings most of the time...and murder, rape and other very "adult" material was completely within limits. Its a big theme in Neil Gaiman's Sandman, for instance.

If kids want light go watch the animated movie again.

Romanek had brilliant idea with Wolfman but like always producers didnt have balls to do it. So they went the easiest way. Same seems to happen with this project.

I love fairy tales, but enough of this "dark twist" bullshit! Fairy tales have always been dark! Also, enough with the Lord of the Rings Syndrome! Why does every freaking fairy tale have to take place in Europe with a pure white cast?! I'm so tired of it. Fairy tales are universal, Hollywood! Some diversity please!....Okay, I'm done ranting :)
