MULAN Is The Sixth Most Streamed Movie Of 2020 Despite Its Hefty $29.99 Price Tag

The vast majority of 2020 movies have been delayed, though some did find their way to streaming services. The question is, did Mulan perform well enough to bring some Marvel Studios titles to Disney+?

With COVID-19 continuing to cause chaos in Hollywood, studios have delayed the vast majority of their blockbusters. Some titles have gone straight to streaming or PVOD platforms, of course, with Mulan being one of the most noteworthy examples.

When the live-action adventure hit Disney+, it was for $29.99 on a "Premier Access" service which since appears to have fallen by the wayside. After all, Pixar's Soul is now coming to Disney+ on Christmas Day for free, while Black Widow is sticking with a theatrical release after being pushed from this week all the way to next May.

However, the data shared by Variety reveals that Mulan ended up being the sixth most streamed title of 2020 despite that hefty price tag. Could that bode well for future "Premier Access" debuts? It's certainly possible, though also noteworthy that it's been topped by movies that were released for "free" (as part of the monthly subscription fees people pay, and not an additional charge).

As the performance of Hamilton: The Movie and Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm (check out our review of that one by clicking here) prove, there is a high demand for premium content on streaming services that don't cost subscribers $30 a pop.

Still, if theaters remain closed, it's entirely possible that more big movies will be sold through Digital services, but that may hinge on how the next few months go.

Check out the top ten below:

1. Hamilton: The Movie
2. Borat 2: Subsequent Moviefilm
3. My Spy
4. Extraction
5. Phineas & Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe
6. Mulan
7. The Old Guard
8. The Trial of the Chicago 7
9. Roald Dahl’s The Witches (2020)
10. The Lovebirds

@dragon316 - im sure some people got i not transformers through the movies. Im sure people have gotten into franchises through worst stuff, but numbers speak for themselves. People stopped showing up after the fourth film.

Hell my first bond movie was quantum of solace, the worst of the daniel craig films.

Doesnt change the actual quality of the films. Like lets face it a lot of crap makes money. Why? Because of the effects, action and nostalgia (most of those new fans were probably taken by their parents).

@dragon316 - also transformers had been regaining popularity before the movies. The unicrom trilogy of shows (the ones i grew up with, although yeah they did not age well) was very popular at the time. Toys sold very well

@dracula - Bumblebee wasn't exactly a day 1 must see movie. Besides that it was going up against Aquaman and Mary Poppins 2. As someone who became a fan because of the Bay movies, the first 3 were enjoyable (Revenge of the Fallen has parts that I could enjoy), but 4 and 5 you could tell Bay just wanted to move on. Bumblebee was fine, a bitt more action would have been cool though.

Bad news: The movie isn't good.

Good news: Maybe this will be enough for other films to at least be considered for on demand releases

Just like theatrical releases, this isn't saying much. If I try hard I might think of 10 big theatrical and vod releases of 2020 movies (making a top 10 of this year is not gonna be hard)

I have no idea what to make of Mulan’s streaming run.

First we had the report that it was watched by so many subscribers in North America that it would have made hundreds of millions for the studio (money that would not have been subject to the usual split that a theatrical gross is subject to...). I said that if that were true they’d have little reason to focus on theatrical releases going forward. Others said there was no way Disney would not shout that from the rooftops, but I reasoned that they’d probably need some time to actually figure out a plan for the future before giving investors reason to pressure them into streaming any and everything.

Then we got a different report that said that Mulan had made less than Trolls 2 (a film that is not on the list above at all. So that contradicted the first report.

Then we had Black Widow and other films shift their release dates back, and the word that Soul would go straight to being free on Disney+, which seemed to confirm that the $30 Mulan model wasn’t a hit.

Then we got word that Disney *is* in fact reconfiguring their entire Entertainment business to focus an emphasis on “straight to consumer” product going forward, and that they’d lay out details to investors in a December investor presentation, which is right in line with what I said after hearing that first report of Mulan profits.

And now now we see this list, where Mulan is the only film that had a separate pay-for-streaming price in the entire top ten.

So yeah... How successful was Mulan’s release? I guess we need to wait for the investor calls to see if we get some hard data.

Looking at the original article, there are no other pay per view films on the expanded list, so maybe stuff like Trolls 2 wasn’t counted at all.

It sounds impressive until you realize only one movie here is a new release outside of Mulan.
