With COVID-19 continuing to cause chaos in Hollywood, studios have delayed the vast majority of their blockbusters. Some titles have gone straight to streaming or PVOD platforms, of course, with Mulan being one of the most noteworthy examples.
When the live-action adventure hit Disney+, it was for $29.99 on a "Premier Access" service which since appears to have fallen by the wayside. After all, Pixar's Soul is now coming to Disney+ on Christmas Day for free, while Black Widow is sticking with a theatrical release after being pushed from this week all the way to next May.
However, the data shared by Variety reveals that Mulan ended up being the sixth most streamed title of 2020 despite that hefty price tag. Could that bode well for future "Premier Access" debuts? It's certainly possible, though also noteworthy that it's been topped by movies that were released for "free" (as part of the monthly subscription fees people pay, and not an additional charge).
As the performance of Hamilton: The Movie and Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm (check out our review of that one by clicking here) prove, there is a high demand for premium content on streaming services that don't cost subscribers $30 a pop.
Still, if theaters remain closed, it's entirely possible that more big movies will be sold through Digital services, but that may hinge on how the next few months go.
