PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Star Johnny Depp Not Returning; Reportedly Walking Off The Plank As Jack Sparrow

With the hiring of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Disney is planning to re-imagine the whole PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise. But is losing Depp the right move?

Following the lackluster domestic performance of Dead Men Tell No Tales (it performed well overseas), it was uncertain what Disney would do with the iconic property. With the arrival of Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, fans are wondering what, if anything, will carry over from the previous five installments.

Interestingly, The Daily Mail is reporting that Johnny Depp has been cut out of the series' future, with an apparent confirmation from Curse of the Black Pearl screenwriter Stuart Beattie. After being asked if Depp is finished with the franchise, the creative nodded, implying his exit. He then expressed gratefulness for the star's influence on the franchise:

I think he's had a great run. Obviously, he's made that character his own and it's become the character he's most famous for now. . . I think Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. It's the only character he's played five times, it's the character he dresses up in to visit children in hospitals, it's what he'll be remembered for.

At the end of the latest installment, the return of Orlando Bloon, Keira Knightley and Bill Nighy's Davy Jones was heavily implied for the next film. Dead Men Tell No Tales also positioned Kaya Scodelario and Titans' Brenton Thwaites as leads going forward. It is unknown whether they will be reprising their roles, but the return of all five would be welcome by fans.

Pirates has always relied on Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, with his star power fueling the franchise's stability overseas, but narratively, the character was close to useless in the latest film. Without him would the franchise still succeed? Most likely, but if we have learned anything lately, properties do not always ensure box office success. Even Lucasfilm, which was thought to be infallible, found box office failure with Solo: A Star Wars Story. Ultimately, a franchise is nothing without its core characters, therefore the prominent return of the original cast (minus Depp) is the right way forward for a reboot.

Well, it did seem like they were planning for Will or Henry to be the lead for the 6th movie; however I would expect them to keep Depp/Jack around as a supporting character.
Going for a full reboot (casting a new Jack) will be a mistake imo.

@Pantherpool - yeah, going for a full reboot now would be a mistake. I haven't seen 5, but I got the general gist of what happened and I know they intended for a 6th film. So make a 6th that closes out the franchise, have Depp in a supporting role, even minor if necessary. And then in a decade or two, reboot Pirates (if they are that desperate for money, which we know the Mouse is!)...

@HeavyMetal4Life - I don’t know how desperate is the right word but there certainly always willing to try to make more.

The problem is not Depp but the lack of good writing for Depp... when left to improvise it gets stale without a good story to back it up.

I'm all for another Pirates film. New crew, a few cameos and mentions. Keep in the same uni and I want more Peg legs.

The first one is great, the second one is good. The rest suck.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - yeah, it's the third one that made the ship start to sink.

Considering he completely phoned it in the last Pirates movie he was in? Yeah, let him walk the plank.

He was pretty bad in the last two so whatever. He went from being a competent clever pirate who made himself out to be a drunken idiot into just a drunken idiot. I love the first 3 but I don’t really need any more at this point

good. the first two are the only ones worth a damn in this franchise.
special mention to the second one thou, because Davy Jones is probably one of the best realized CG chracters in film history. that effect is from 2006 and it looks better than most CG characters nowadays.

Disney,

Please trade this franchise to Sony for the FULL rights to Spiderman.

Your welcome,

@Forthas - why? they could just wait it out until the inevitable closure of Sony's film division. it's bound to happen at some point.

@Spidey91 - With all of the titles that they pick up from Fox...there is no way they could give the attention needed to the new properties AND continue their slate of Marvel, Star Wars and their Disney films. With the Fox deal thye have...

Avatar
Alien Franchise
Cocoon
Die Hard
Home Alone
Independence Day
Night at the Museum
Planet of the Apes
Predator Franchise

So they should leverage what they have and barter some of these IPO's especially as Sony has little in the way of large scale franchises they can develop.

@Forthas - Cocoon? LMAO!

The only IPs worth continuing for Disney are Avatar, Alien, Planet of the Apes, and Predator.

And the latest Predator was so bad, it might have killed the franchise forever, if not for 10 years. Boy, was it a stinker.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon -

Yes Cocoon!

You ever heard of a reboot? As far as Predator goes...you could say the same thing about the last Terminator film. The only problem with Predator is that it focuses too much on the aliens. They need to have more character development. I actually thought Predator (with Adrien Brody) was underrated and should be the sequel to the first one. They could just ignore all the others.

@Forthas -

- Avatar will obviously continue.
- I have a feeling that Disney is going to take a long hard look at what did and din't work with the latest installments of the the Alien and Predator franchise, and after a number of years try to revive those two franchises. Maybe have Blomkamp do his Alien film. I honestly think someone, whether its Scott or not idk, but someone needs to finish the Prometheus trilogy. Covenant pissed me off so much but I hate when the story is left unfinished like that. Wrap up the Engineers story (actually focus on it this time instead of butchering it) and lay the groundwork for the events that started Alien. With regards to Predator, I doubt we get a sequel to the recent film. Someone needs to seriously clean up a massive mess. Its amazing that these two franchises, which have so much untapped potential, are so difficult to get anything correct nowadays.
- Die Hard will likely end after the 6th film; hope its good because 5 was so bad (and I'm a massive fan of the franchise).
- Home Alone is dead.
- Independence Day is dead.
- Night at the Museum is probably dead, I don't see them making another one.
- Planet of the Apes will get a new trilogy.

The other big one you left off is Kingsman.
Forthas
Forthas - 10/27/2018, 3:03 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - Forgot about Kingsman....All of the ones you think are dead are not...one word for you...Halloween!
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 10/27/2018, 3:11 PM
@Forthas - well I never considered Halloween dead. I also don't consider Friday the 13th dead, or Elm Street dead. Additionally, Halloween's case is not the same as the others.

I called those franchises dead because of very obvious reasons. No one is asking for a Home Alone reboot/sequel. Independence Day: Resurgence killed plans for a sequel. And after Robin Williams death, I don't see them revisiting Night at the Museum.

The Predator might have just killed plans for a sequel, but its not a dead franchise because there is a lot of potential. Those other 'dead' films currently have little to no potential (and again, no one is really asking for a sequel or remake for those properties).

@Forthas @porgmyers- told ya...

I bet when Disney gets the franchise back we get an Alien film with Blomkamp directing and Cameron producing.
